Bandwith Needs
« on: October 06, 2014, 04:32:33 PM »
Hello!

I am just starting to experiment with using my Davis Vue Weather Station as a way to update my website via Weather Display. I've currently been using APIs but am just now getting to use Weather Display.

Here is my question: If I wanted to upload/update most of the files every 5 minutes or so, what type of bandwith would this use? I only have 500 GB of bandwith a month and I don't want to use it all up from the ftp uploads. Does anyone have any insight into how much this will use? Any suggestions to limit the amount? Any help from the experts would be appreciated.

My website is Weather4Atlanta: http://www.foreyesonly.net/atlanta

Nothing as of today is pulling from Weather Display. I have all of those files hidden and not live yet.

Thanks!
Eric

Well, first thing I'd look at is my hosting,.... 500Gb is a lot, but are you dedicated, or what?  I use a shared server, unlimited, uploading and streaming 5 1024x576 cams, weather data, etc with no issues... nice not to have to worry about BW... anyway, you should do fine with 500gb unless you start adding on...
I see you're using MDD Hosting....

Last month my total usage was 68gb according to my router. This includes:
WD uploading to the website
GRL3 uploading radar images
Blitzortung lightning detector uploading
3 webcams uploading pics every 5 minutes
Pandora streaming music
Amazon streaming videos (no cable)
General internet usage

Dave showed you...   Just checked mine, and it's quite similar... depends on who hits my webcams, for how long, and the NOAA Wx radio stream to my site... you'll be ok.

Thanks so much!I know most of the files are small but just wanted an idea what I was dealing with. I don't have a webcam yet...the key word being yet.

I really like what you have done with the "HI" & "LO" temps.

I average around 60 gigs a month. 2 cameras with HD image uploaded every 2-3 minutes, weather data and 8-10 hours netflix.

You won't have any issues with uploading data to your site at all especially with 500 GB. Where things might become an issue is with visitors actually visiting the site. That probably won't be an issue for you for a while but something to keep in mind.
