Homebrew T/H sensor
« on: January 29, 2014, 03:50:20 AM »
PLEASE NOTE THE INCREASED PRICE FROM £43 TO £56. THIS IS TO COVER SHIPPING THAT I HAD NOT PREVIOUSLY CONSIDERED. SORRY.
I have received some interest about my replacement T/H sensor in another thread.

It has the same dimensions as the genuine Davis part, but uses the SHT15 sensor instead of the SHT11. I also uses the Sensiron SF1 filter cap and give the entire board, (including edges) a coating of aerospace conformal coat.

The sensor is held on a "heat island" to (hopefully) improve thermal response time.

I do hope to offer these for sale if there is enough interest. The cost will be £56 (~$90)

I always wondered if someone would jump on that idea. Good luck with it! :-)

I think that your support is too big for a good thermal response time, but it's better than the original
I have make mine with a SHT75 and SF1 filter cap.

Really? It's only marginally larger than the filter cap, and only joined to the main PCB by a small strip. How would you propose doing this to improve the response better. Any feedback with regards to this would be greatly appreciated.

You must reduce the PCB to the max,for example you don't need pcb for the wire.
Nevertheless you have done a good job.

I have seen that done using only small enamelled wires running to the board, but I had gone for ease of manufacture, and the requirement for the filter cap. I accept this will never be perfect, but I at least hope it is an improvement.

Now if only there was something like this for the original VP, I'm sure that you'd have a few takers.

I may be interested in this though to try alongside my VP2 as a comparison. I've already replaced the SHT11 with an SHT15 after it failed, so a comparison would be interesting.

I've had a number of people send me their VP2 sensor for repair, but thought I'd also build one of my own.

And here it is.

Buy a Belfryboy T/H sensor

Please note I only have one of these available currently, any subsequent orders will take around 2 weeks to fulfil, this is because of the length of time to procure bare PCBs.

This is awesome!! Have you run it alongside an original Davis sensor to see how they compare?

How about a photo with a ruler in it so we can better judge the size of the package? Or, placing the dimensions on the first post...

it's the same size as the davis board, so that it can just drop in as a replacement. even the mounting holes are the same.

Mr. BelfryBoy:

What was your take on doing a replacement for the original VPro?

I have an original that is fine in every way, except in need of a temp/humidity replacement.  The larder is bare, and no replacements or upgrades are to be had.  It seems such a shame and so wasteful to toss the whole unit just because this one sensor is whacko and Davis no longer provides replacements for them.  Can you use your development expertise to save these stations, too?
Thanks

I believe that's the same humidity element the 7859 sensor for the Weather Monitor II uses. So it would fix a lot of those out there as well.

I currently have sat in front of me an old analogue sensor with all the potting removed to try and figure out how Davis originally did the measurement. But don't hold your breath....

Order placed , I just ordered one for now but will get another for my back up station once I do a side by side comparison of the two.  Easy to do with paypal shipping in USA will be through USPS.
Thanks belfryboy I've really wanted to go with the tighter spec SHT15 sensor for some time now.

Thanks for all the interest.

due to a monumental cock up on my part  I realised that I would lose money on any that I shipped at the £43 price, so I have updated the PayPal button to £56. I will honour all purchases at the original price that were made before the increase.

I realise that this means in the US the is very little difference (<$20) between my item and a genuine Davis T/H sensor, but for those of us outside the US it is still cheaper.

sorry for any inconvenience caused.

Belfryboy.

Belfryboy my order was US. I have no problem covering shipping. I'll send another 20 dollars when I get back home. Understand where international shipping can be more.

I, too, have no problem with "paying my honest due" to cover S/H...but, I DO have a question: How do YOU handle the "import tax" box on the shipping label(s)?  Somethings I've sent to europe had to be marked either "Gift" or "Sample"...seemingly on books too.

Can you describe the sensor or PM a picture of it to me?
