Weather Station Pics
« on: December 28, 2009, 07:38:12 PM »
Here are some pics of the outside portion of my weather station.  These were all taken after the Christmas blizzard finally ended around here.  I was getting some pics of the snow and decided to grab a few of the weather station while I was outside.

VP2 and OS-968

Anemometers about 15 ft AGL.  Notice they aren't pointing in the same direction.  We had freezing rain before the blizzard, the cups froze up on both but the vane was still moving on the Davis.  So while hearing the wind out side rattle the house I have no official wind gust report from during the blizzard.

Complete set up at a very wide angle.

A slightly different angle.

I'll get the command center inside the house posted in the near future.  Right now it is a mess and I need to consolidate pc's, software, boltek card, webcam etc...

Good job with the installation! Is the mast PVC?
Looks like some good "seeing" (scope) conditions there with a sky like that.

VP2 and OS-968

Awesome looking setup.

When I saw the above photo, I thought for sure you where living here in my neighborhood.  The house in the background is identical to a house on the opposite end of the block , and it is even setting in the same field/lot with the same exact background to it.   It really freaked me out at first.

So why are the anemometers pointing in different directions?

Thanks,

The Davis anemometer needs to point N, the OS south...

you can though add a dir offset to the VP console though so you can set the VP wind vane to any direction on mounting

it is a nice setup, and great looking location

if the mast is PVC, does it need stays?

The mast is Radio Shack tv antenna metal not pvc.  The OS anemometer mast points south so the anemometers don't disturb each others air.  It is offset in VWS/WD/Cumulus when in backup mode.  Otherwise the different angles of the vanes are due to the ice storm freezing the OS and VP.  However, the VP thawed at 2:30 in the morning, which I don't quite understand.  I can understand the black hardware soaking up some sun and thawing earlier than the white OS but I don't know why it would happen at 2:30 in the morning.

The sky looks prettier than it actually is courtesy of a circular polarizer filter on the camera lense.  And, unfortunately the skies aren't great for star gazing as Kansas City is only 20 miles south of my house.  However, the stargazing is much better than when I lived in KC proper.

Swagged piping where the tube slides into an expanded tube  like  your exhaust pipe goes together.

That's an unusually cool setup.  I might decide to copy after you and raise my Davis anemometer on a 15 ft. pole.  It would be easier and less expensive than putting it on my roof.  Any particular reason why you're going with two weather stations?

Copy away, I did set the Radio Shack masts in concrete and you can see it strapped to the 4x4 that also serves as a post for the short row of grapes.  It still sways a little in the wind but not too bad.  Significant other did not want me mounting the set up on the roof for fear of leaks.  I had it mounted on a large tripod from Ambient with a couple landscape stakes pounded into the feet of the tripod.  The stakes don't work that great when the ground is super saturated from rain and it cost me an anemometer when it blew over.

The OS weather station is a backup.  The Davis had some issues earlier this year and it was almost as cheap to buy an OS than to fix the Davis.  After I already ordered the OS I had another discussion with the folks at Davis and it ended up costing a little less to get it fixed than I thought it would.  I didn't feel like sending the OS back so I have a backup weather station.  It only takes a few minutes to switch everything over to the OS if something happens.

Thanks for all the comments everyone.
