Ad-Free WU?
« on: March 19, 2015, 06:01:25 PM »
Has anybody tried the paid ad-free subscription to Weather Underground?

They state:
"For $10 per year, you'll get ad-free, real-time weather with no banners, no sponsor links and no java pop-ups!"

Does this mean:
A. My weather page would be ad free for anyone who views it.
B. A cookie will be placed on my computer so that any WU station I visit will load ad-free.
C. None of the above.

Any helpful info/Comments would be greatly appreciated.

I send them my weatherdata and for some reason (I may be grandfathered in or just lucky)  I do not pay them any fees at all.

I believe the OP is speaking of paying just get the ads removed, not to send them data. I pay nothing also.

It's a one time deal      pay once and never agin as long as you send data.

It only applies to you  not everyone else so others will see adds on your page.

I signed up for the subscription years ago and got grandfathered in without having to pay.

To answer your questions, there are no ads on any station or page you view on Wunderground.com so long as you are signed in with your account. If someone were to not have a paid subscription and access your station, they would still see ads. If you log out of your subscription account, you will start seeing ads again yourself. Hope this helps!

I haven't seen an ad of any kind on WU in years.

That may be because I haven't been to that site at all in years though.

I find other ways to get my weather without feeding the TWC kitty.

Many years ago before I started providing data I paid $5 per year for the no-ads and there weren't any ads.

Contributors to WU (weather data) get an ads-free complementary subscription which works as long as you sign-in to WU with your WU userid/pass.  It only applies to your viewing of WU website, not to others viewing your WU data on the WU site (they still see the ads unless they either contribute data or pay to have the ads removed)

Ever since I started posting DATA to WU my account has continued to show as a paid subscriber, and remains ad-free.

Thanks everybody for your responses.

What I've come to realize is that (as a couple of you noted), if I log into WU I don't see ads.
My wife and I have also been viewing WU on our smartphones, a tablet, and occasionally on a laptop.
Those devices have been used without logging in to WU, and ads have been included.
I'll set up the phones and tablet to log into WU to avoid the ads.

Thanks!

Have you tried the native apps on the portable devices?  The iPhone WU app does not display ads when you log in, and has some extra features like allowing you to set weather alerts for your favorite locations so that you get NWS notices and stuff as they are transmitted.....
WU Gold Stars for everyone!
