Firmware updates for WS-2902a
« on: December 31, 2018, 10:02:59 PM »
So I opened AWNET when I was near my WS-2902a base station and sure enough there was an update available.

I did not have any clue there was a firmware upgrade available except that some people on this forum have been blathering on about updates. They were referring to a completely different system (WS-2000) but I was wondering...

Seriously though does Ambient have any system for notifying customers about something like this? I mean once set up who needs AWNET any more? How is anyone to know if an update is waiting to be uploaded? Is there even a page on their website that we are supposed to consult once every year or whatever?

It would be nice if there was a better way. Like an alert popping up in the app or on the website.

I just pop the app open every now and then. Not too difficult...

You need AWNET to complete the update process on the WS-2902A display console. AWNET is one place to see an update notice. There is also a notice placed in the header of your Dashboard. Both notices only appear when your version is no longer current.

I'm in agreement with you that customers ought to receive email notification when an update gets released. I have already been lobbying Ed for this exact request. I've also suggested that both AWNET and the Dashboard display current version status and that the customer is current.

At some point, updates would ideally be automatically installed should the user desire; otherwise, manually installed.

This is a mock up of what I proposed for the Dashboard header:

And blathering on a bit further, if you want something introduced, Ed is most gracious in receiving your feedback, so let him hear your kind and constructive words, and suggestions for improvement. Who knows, maybe our voices can make a difference?

Just noticed today there is a new firmware update for the 2902.  It is firmware version 4.0.7. Apparently versions.5 and .6 were  failures. Does anybody know what this new update does before I download it

I just installed it Saturday and it seems fine. I have nothing to compare it to, however, as it is a new station for me.

Same here for my WS-2902A; all systems are looking good.

Well, that's flat out wrong.

I understand from reading FB group and this forum that 4.0.8 came out sometime in the last day or two, so I checked my dashboard for this update notice (web browser and in the app). Nonesuch. All I had on the app was an ad for a pool monitor.

The Ambient system is new to me at less than 2 months old. So I am looking here almost daily now, but in a couple months when everything is running smoothly I will move on and not worry about it. How will I know about needed updates then?

I think I was more wrong in passing along something Ed had told me

Thanks to Dan for giving us a heads up about 4.0.8.

I'm still holding out on to version 4.0.2. I read that 4.0.3 fixed excessive DNS querying. I've looked at my network traffic and I don't see excessive bandwidth usage. So if it is querying DNS on every upload so what.

So for me it seems 4.0.2 is not broken. I had every intention of upgrading to 4.0.3 after a few weeks so as to not be a ginnea pig (to ensure it didn't introduce new bugs). I prefer to let new firmware become known stable before upgrading. But now I can't upgrade to 4.0.3 because 4.0.7 came out and shortly after now we have 4.0.8.  Even worse is that there is no reference as to what 4.0.7 nor 4.0.8 do as there are no published release notes.

So I'm going to hang onto 4.0.2. If there was the ability to go back to a prior version I wouldn't find it so critical to hang onto and hold back upgrading, but it isn't possible to downgrade.

I really can't wait for the WS-2000 display console to become available separately and get rid of this nonsense, as the WS-2000 is able to be downgraded and up till now is seeing new firmware with release notes.
