Title: ObserverIP latest Firmware Upgrade-NO TELNET
Post by: dupreezd on September 30, 2017, 10:46:57 AM
This morning, just out of curiosity, I checked Ambient website for the latest OIP firmware. To my surprise this is what the latest release do.

Quote
Version 4.3.1:
•Removes Telnet capability.

There is no release date, so I don't know when it was done. Also no explanation why they are removing Telnet.

I am redirecting the OIP to my website where I pull the data out before passing the data to WU. For this, I need to be able to Telnet to the OIP to change the settings. Screen scraping is an alternative, but not very reliable.

I guess I will be staying on 4.2.1 from now on.
Who else re-directs the OIP?

Could anyone help me find a copy of the 4-2-1 firmware. I also don't want to lose telnet port 23 capability. Just got an Osprey 2902 a few months ago and just got am ObserverIp v4.1.3 today and my Tl-wr3020 is in the mail, well UPS. I read I need WS-1600 IP and the version I received today only goes to ws-1400.  Trying to get the software together so I can write my own. Don't want to update to the new Observer firmware 4.3.6 as am afraid I might not be able to revert back as is the practice with most devices these days.

No problem in going back to previous versions, done that myself.

Telnet has long been considered a security risk and has been dropped from most everything.  A session is too easy to sniff and get the password.

Usually it's functionality gets replaced by SSH.  I usually use PuTTY for that.

I agree on that. But on internal networks it is still 'ok' as you need physical access to the wired network to sniff the packets.

True.  Unfortunately many are reactionary about it these days.  They see "telnet" and have a conniption.

Responding to a previous msg. So you are saying you can update firmware to newest and still revert back to previous versions... If I read you right? Yes Telnet was a bad word back 10 or so years ago. everyone thought bad things would happen to your personal stuff if you left that port open. Great if you want to see what's going on and make your own changes.

That is correct.

Now I am curious, on the Telnet thing and nincehelser comment

Can you check if the new version supports SSH1 and/or SSH2 before installing 4.2.1?

4.2.1 does not support SSH.
Thanks

SSH is normally port 22 and it is in fact not open on the ObserverIP.  The only ports I found open where 23, 69, 80 and 5000 so far.

Apologies, I re-read your post and saw you have not upgraded to 4.3.6 yet.
I might try it just for kicks

I have a post somewhere here how to do it via a back door

Found it.

There is a "back door" method to recover from a failed update

If you don't already have previous firmware versions stored on your computer, download it first.
Start IP Tools, but don't search for the observerIP using the 'Search' button. Click on 'Upgrade'. Choose the firmware .bin file of your choice and click on 'Upgrade Firmware'. After a few seconds, you will see the firmware being pushed to the OIP. This should restore your device to working condition.

Tried that. the progress bar as in first attempt never starts the upload/update process. Not sure what's wrong. Worked out of the box before updating to 4.2.1 or trying to.

Just remembered but not sure if it's on this ObserverIP or the Meteobrige you hold the reset during power up?

On the OIP you just press the reset switch.

Yep, very bricked unless someone knows another way without opening a brand new OIP.

TFTP server @ 192.168.1.3 is running on UDP port 69 successfully".

Progress bad never indicates progress uploading or updating

Did you try flashing version 4.1.3 back to the OIP? ambient_v4.1.3.bin
Have you downloaded the latest IPtools? (32 or 64 bit)

Solved.

I initially used a Windows 7 computer to set it up manually changing it's IP to 192.168.0.99 and changed to my routers 192.168.1.88 subnet 255.255.255.0. Unpluged and connected it to a switch connected to the WS-2902's wifi. Not thinking I tried to update/upgrade new firmware over the switch connection to the OIP. Remembering. I went back to the wifes Windows 7 and plugged directly into router on same. Worked like it was supposed to like you said. Someone that doesn't have 33 devices connected to an 8 port router TAKE NOTE.

Thanks for making me think and needed 4 aspirin to get my brain cell firing.

OH. um guy's... read the direction. My wife made me say that...

That she is. Only cause she knows I don't like doing things the easy way. I found a few more ports. 1060 and 1077 open but am not able to access them or know what they do. will get back to you. They are hidden ports for whatever reason. working on it with a buddy that knows more.
