The Crows Tell a Story
« on: October 29, 2011, 10:52:47 AM »
Never heard of these before:

If crows fly low, winds going to blow; If crows fly high, winds going to die.

Also, no weather is ill if the wind is still.

With them all in the same cage, they can't poop in your rain guage.

"...eat crow...tastes like chicken..."?

When I was teaching chemistry at Drake Univ.  Dr. Joe Woods was dept chair.   Something came up and the saying "eat crow"  was mentioned and he said, "I have actually eaten a crow before."   He explained his parents were poor, the snow would fall through the roof on to his blanket so he had to literally uncover the snow in the morning from his bed.    He said at one time he and his brother went out looking for game, shot a crow and cooked and ate it.

He said his only memory was that it was very tough and gamey tasking.  He said he didn't eat it again.  He was a really wonderful professor to know. Very humble, but would go the mile for you.  However held your feet to the fire. (roast toes, taste like chicken?"

he had this story.. he was a wwII fighter pilot in the pacific.    He remembers that his plane took a nose dive and when he could get it pulled up he could see wave crests out his windows.  The crew on the aircraft carrier  thought he was a gonner. other than that, he never talked about his war experiences.

He used to ride a bicycle to the office,  had snow tires and everything.   I recall coming up this hill west of campus in my car and the traffic was slow, sliding, swerving as it was  icy , slushy as well and they were trying to miss someone on a bike.  When I passed it, there was Dr. Woods, long brown coat and one of those caps with the ear flaps that snapped under the chin.

I got to campus, parked and went in.  Soon he came in with his bike, looked at me and said "The drivers out there are morons and dangerous the way they drive."  I said they were trying not to run you over.  He stopped looked at me oddly and broke out into a huge grin  " and I did a great job of it, didn't I"

One last story, his wife came to campus and he made the remark "These McDonalds hamburgers are the best I have eaten in a long time. " his wife looked at  him with this frown " Joe, I thought you said mine were the best you've eaten."   We all scattered for the labs, didn't want to be around for round 3.   Never asked him about it...

one of the hazards of getting older.. you meet a lot of interesting people along the way and wonder..  do they think the same of me?

Crows are starting to come in from the country.   Harvesting is finishing up , been a dry fall so far, cold, but dry.. won't be long before the spilled corn is gone and the damn crows are pooping everywhere.

I used to teach at a downtown school and I recall having to walk through the crow poop and the eggy smell swore me off eggs for a long while   One of the hospitals has a bird call that is supposed to chase them away.  It is on the mental health wing, I bet  it is driving some dude nuts  ,.."i swear  I hear birds"

I got to the point on that walk,  I wish I had to travel the skywalk and miss it, but my campus was not fortunate.   Oh  I wanted so much to bring hands full of poison corn out for these buzzards, but oh well..

If crows fly low, winds going to blow; If crows fly high, winds going to die.

This is interesting... Here on the central California coast from fall to spring., I've observed the crows commuting ("crow-muting"?) from roughly NW to SE around dawn, and then back again around dusk. For the limited time I see them whilst walking the dogs, and roughly counting them, there are hundreds, if not thousands, in groups of 20 to 50 or 60.

Presumably, they spend the night out near the coast around Los Osos, and commute to south county farms and vineyards during the day. They don't cause us any problems as they pass by.

Mostly they fly a hundred feet or more above ground level. Occasionally, they will be low enough to hear the flap of their wings (very cool). More often than not, they will be randomly cawing to each other.

Rarely, their transit will be more disorganized, lower level (tens of feet above the hilly terrain) and more irregular in path than their normal straight line path. They'll even light in the trees in the woods, and chatter to each other before taking off again.

Here they either sit in the yard or the nearby trees, or are WAY HIGH up in the air.

I was born and bred in Bluefield, WV and vividly remember, as about a third grader, taking a field trip to Charleston, WV. It was about sixty years ago and the turnpike had just been built. Of all the "wonders" I saw, I remember the museum in the basement of the state capital building where I saw a stuffed crow. It was the biggest bird I had ever seen. I remember thinking, " That thing's as big as a chicken!" I think I remember that there was a bounty on them but I'm not sure. I guess it's a good thing they didn't have a stuffed buzzard or I might not have ever gone outdoors again!

Huh?  Goose is a delicacy.  People all over the world eat goose.

Goose liver (foie gras) is one of the big three gourmet foods (along with truffles and shark fin).

People in the Orient eat carp all the time.

What people shouldn't eat are scavengers. (each person can define scavenger in their own way.)

Man they'd have a field day hunting them over here. Morning Doves everywhere, everyday. Kind of like sky rats. Never (knowingly) ate one though.

Where a lot of the geese around here hang by the chemical plants, its always been heard over here not to eat them...Ive heard to not eat carp because they are strickly bottom feeders.

we have wild geese all over town,  if there is a pond, natural or not,  there  are geese grazing.. OH they look tame enough to go over  , throw a tarp over and hopefully not get goosed by the rest of the geese..  however...  these dang ponds are in public view...

A lot of people are trying to get rid of the geese because of all the goose poopies they leave.  You'd think they would poop in the lake, but they don't .   Kind of like a shike poke,  walk and turd.

Boy do we have geese here.  They are mean and never give the right of way to cars
They like the grass better than the 10,000 lakes.

Many condo areas have retaining ponds. The geese like them-the U of Minn will come and net them and take them to a rural area.

I would think Carter lake could tell amazing stories from DeSoto Wildlife refuge in Iowa.  Sometimes there are so many they show up on radar.
