Linksys router WRT54G as wireless repeater/extender
« on: November 03, 2012, 12:28:52 PM »
I have an old router.   I want to use it to extend wireless and hook it up to my DVR.

I don't think it can be done with its current firmware. I have found other firmware on the net that may work.

Has anyone done this/Can it work.

My process so far:
1. hooked it up to my current computer.
2. Can get into the setup menu/config.

Cannot get it to 'take on' my network connections/wireless.

Any help is appreciated. Time is not an issue.

Here is the info I have found

It looks like you've done a bit of research on this, but you are correct that the Linksys can't be used as a repeater with the current firmware. It can, however, become ythe WAP for your network but that will require running a network cable between the routers. I don't know how your network config, but I suspect this isn't what you were looking for.

Outside buying a repeater, dd-wrt is probably your only bet on getting a repeater set up by possibly using your old router. I've never used dd-wrt and am not a unix expert so can't really help you out with configuring it. I bet the interweb has a bunch of info on how to set up dd-wrt on that router, however; those Linksys routers are everywhere !

Here's an example http://lifehacker.com/5563196/turn-your-old-router-into-a-range+boosting-wi+fi-repeater

What you can do with your particular linksys depends a lot on what type and version it is.

Thanks for the link, bookmarked it.

WRT54g  version 5.0

Flashing light.  unidentified network.

will not bring up an IP address like 192.168.1.1

my fault on this-no big loss but wanted to try

bummer! Sorry to hear that. I was just getting ready to try the same thing (while nail biting) to an old wrt-54g to get a WAP out back of the house. Reading through the requirements and procedures I found out that the version 7 model I have is not supported. So yesterday I fished 30 meters of cat 5E instead.

I was reading on dd-wrt forum a month or so ago, there is a guy there who has figured out how to 'unbirck' that
router.  It may be worth doing some searching.

It may have been on the 'tomato' site, can't remember
