Thanks Curly.  Is it hard to put a title and different background like yours?

Piero, I had my files wrong in the FTP.  But it's working now.

It's not too difficult to add a background. I googled 'desktop wallpaper steel' to come up with an image for the gauge table and then looked for a background. Add some graphics for the gauge titles and put everything in a table to line it all up.
You can see how it's all put together by viewing the page source.

You have to "Browse" and then "Login" and then navigate to the folder where you want the weather flash data files stored.  That is how the "path" information gets written back to the first screen in your screen capture (the weather flash internet settings).  I'm doing this from memory right now and not sitting in front of the VWS console, but I'm pretty sure this is correct.

Many apologies Chris, Scott is right. I also was not in front of VWS and I was wrong, you can not write directly.
I will try to guide you step-by-step with screenshots, I hope that this time things will work.

I have the steel series page working, but find that it only stays active for less than a minute when I go to the page and then I have to refresh. It lasts a little longer after the refresh, but rarely goes the default 20 minutes.

Is there something I can check or maybe the problem is with the computer I am using to view the gauges?

Page is located here - http://scannorthcounty.net/weather1/gauges-ss-basic.htm

Thanks,
John

Hello Piero

Ok login step 4  is ok now.

Step 5 is not clear to me  you write :
5- press and insert "gauges" (will appear on the left)

But iff I press there opens a small screen if I fill in gauges it does not appear left top.
Is it not so that I have to go to rightside button GET FILE to select gauges? select my own made gauges file ?
And than  press button   put file ? at the right side.

rgds Chris

I did some testing but I do not want to confuse you , its better to do step by step .To keep it simple. #-o

Ok Chris,
don't press "get file"... We'll transfer the gauges's files on your website later, via client ftp, after making the settings I've posted before.

Follow the print screens I added and let me know

Hi Piero

If fill in the ftp details  I see left top  vws  login succefull  connected  ws vreewijk so thats ok.
If I go to step 5A  click make dir the small screen opens and I can fill in  gauges  but if I click OK nothing happens.

But if I fill in the small line FIRST    /gauge    and than click make dir
suddenly in  the other window where you activate  the  server file in vws  shows
/gauge      in the screen where you fill in activate  as you mentioned before.

the files in RED are not visible.

It is for shure no ftp isue,as I can see on my file manager there is a file now saying GAUGES
strange or  not ?     the screen is not as in you posting but I see the uploaded gauges file on my web in the file manager where all my other uploads go to   but this map  gauges is empty.

Pleasse note that I have VWS at my test computer in the stationless mode so no weather station is connected  during testing the steel gauges ...do you think this has anything to do with it.

Iám confused. But if I see the file gauges on my website's file manager it has been uploaded.

cheers Chris

Hello Ken,
I just installed the 2.2.2 version of steelgauges: everything seemed ok, but after a number of cycles that seems random, the message "station offline - last update X (after midnight) hours ago." With the previous version, however, everything still work well.
Test page for version 2.2.2: http://www.lunavalenza.altervista.org/ssg1/gauges-ss.htm
Page previous version (2.1.0): http://www.lunavalenza.altervista.org/ssg/gauges-ss.htm
In addition: why in the new version when the countdown starts again the first digit is always "10"?
Thank you and best regards

I tried to post the question to Mark: it says that the problem should be relative to the file wflash and wflash2.
The discussion is here: http://sandaysoft.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=9485&p=78401.
What do you think?

Hi Piero,

Depending on how you have VWS doing the WeatherFlash updates (FTP v.s. Active page) can determine how long is the exposure to having an incomplete file present when the steelseriesVWSjson.php script tries to read both wflash.txt and wflash2.txt.
Note that VWS does update the two files at different times and seemingly at different intervals.

If you have a very frequent update set (something less than 10 seconds), I do suggest you change it to 10 seconds in VWS, and to use the active page method (if you're currently using FTP) -- both actions will minimize the uncertainty of getting a complete set of files when the steelseriesVWSjson.php script runs.

Best regards,
Ken

Hi Ken and thanks for the answer.

the first time I installed the steelgauges, in the weatherflash menu  I had enabled "active server", with an interval of 3 seconds. However, after a few hours of operation VWS crashed. So I enabled "server", again for 3 seconds, and the problem was solved.
Now I tried to follow your advice: I enabled only "active server", with an interval of 10 seconds. Something has improved, the problem of "station offline" are no longer resubmitted for more than a quarter of an hour, but then it is inexorably reappeared.
The version 2.1.0, instead, iworks indefinitely, only sometimes the "text file corrupted" message appears, but the cycle continues to operate.
Now the question is: why version 2.1.0 does it work?

Hi Piero,

There are likely two possible sources of the problem:

1) VWS upload of wflash.txt and wflash2.txt is sometimes problematic and may have long pauses or stop working entirely even with the low-overhead of Active server submission.  My own VWS 14.01p49 does this (and prior versions too).  I just ignore it and within a day, it seems to be running again.  So the first source of a problem may be incomplete/stale/mismatched-timestamps on the VWS wflash.txt and wflash2.txt files.

2) the steelseriesVWSjson.php script relies on having solid wflash.txt/wflash2.txt data available to format the JSON return used by the SteelSeries gauges.  There may be a small difference between the 2.1.0 and 2.2 version in handling some data (2.1.0 displayed the 'text file corrupted' message .. maybe 2.2 does not).

I think the root-cause is likely VWS not producing/sending the wflash.txt/wflash2.txt files consistently.

Best regards,
Ken

Hey Ken...

When VWS uploads the 2 files for weatherflash, does it upload them as temporary files then rename them, or does it just upload them and over-write the existing file?

VWS FTP just uploads the files (no upload-as-temp-and-rename).
During the upload, the filesize is 0 with no content ..
The Active Server upload method is faster so there's less '0-bytes' time than the FTP method.

Thanks a lot Ken for your accurate and complete answer,
I'm not a programmer, but as an engineer that I am, I like to understand things as well as possible.
I also noticed the difference between the two versions in the message "text file corrupted" and I pointed out to Mark.
Perhaps the version 2.2.2 is the most "drastic" in interrupting the flow when it finds problems reading txt files.
I think it would be more appropriate to return to a system that, in case of error in the reading, anyway try to read again, without definitively interrupt the operation.
We hope that Mark take them into account in the next release!

Bumping this up -

"I have the steel series page working, but find that it only stays active for less than a minute when I go to the page and then I have to refresh. It lasts a little longer after the refresh, but rarely goes the default 20 minutes."

I am still having a problem with this. The problem is very inconsistent. Some times the gauges stay live for over 5 min, but mostly it will stay live for less than 30 seconds before it needs to be refreshed. I changed the settings to allow the page to be active all the time. I am viewing this on a wireless laptop. Previously had a Linksys wireless router (Older) and just switched to a Netgear 900N hoping that would help, but think it may actually be worse. I also tried on my iPad and the connection only lasts a few minutes.

Is there something I can check or maybe the problem is with the computer I am using to view the gauges?

Page is located here - http://scannorthcounty.net/weather1/gauges-ss-basic.htm

Thanks,
John
