backend failure
« on: September 22, 2018, 11:56:45 AM »
When I request the page for many different WU sites, I get a message "An error occurred  backend failure". Sometimes I refresh the page and it appears, but much of the time the error just happens again. I have to request the page repeatedly to finally get it. This is pretty annoying. What's going on?

Ok, for several days, WU, what was one of the world's leading weather sites, has been down.  We are to believe that IBM does not have the expertise or resources to keep it working. Every time a potential user clicks on weather underground, they are disappointed and go elsewhere, someplace like TWC for instance. They are undoubtedly losing tens of thousands of users a day, or more.

Either by direct design, or indirectly by starving WU for resources, they are killing WU. They will apologize and say they just couldn't keep WU running and suggest we share our hyperlocal data to them on TWC or some other organ they own.

Not happening.

Thank you. I guess I should have expected to look for that in the issues page.

When I request the page for many different WU sites, I get a message "An error occurred  backend failure".

This is happening when I try to view my own station page. When I opened it with Chrome's Incognito Window though, it worked.

It's working fine now for me.

Looks like something is stuck in cache. Try flushing it with CTRL + F5 when you get the error. Mine cleared after the second press.

The CNTRL + F5 also worked on getting the 10 day forecast to reappear.

I think that the folks at IBM really could care less about the quality of the web site WU.

I'm getting this, too, any time I try to load my weather station's page. I have to reload the page anywhere between 4-6 times and then it comes up.

My Webcam has also been really flaky for months. Most of the time WU says my Webcam is missing, but if I go into my profile I can view it just fine.

Worst of all, I never get any response when contacting WU tech support.

WU has been losing data I send to them, as well.

I'm honestly about to stop sending them data. I'm getting frustrated.

It looks like we've got a handle on the backend failures issue now; identifying and removing a very small bit'o'code, and monitoring for a few hours, gives us confidence this issue has been resolved.

I thank you all for sharing your data points and especially offer thanks to those of you who remain positive as we work to resolve these things, remembering that on the other side of every message posted, there are actual living, breathing people reading those messages...who, at the end of the day, are all just trying to do their jobs as best as possible with the tools they've been given.

Yes, this is worth saying, however I truly doubt anyone here has a problem with the worker bees, it's the queen who's leading this site down the drain.
Thank you for your efforts.

Hi, can you confirm the behavior that you were noticing with the 10 day forecast?  Did you see the page but not the graph?

Are you still seeing issues?

The CNTRL + F5 also worked on getting the 10 day forecast to reappear.

I think that the folks at IBM really could care less about the quality of the web site WU.

The "backend failure" issue is happening again about 75% of the time when trying to access the old version of the extended forecast, like this page:
https://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/getForecast?query=pws:KTXAUSTI8&hdf=1&MR=1

Other times, it will load everything but the 10 day forecast.  I even tried the incognito mode and flushing the cache, still no go.  The colored rainbow wheel just turns....

Just wondering if others are experiencing the same thing (spinning wheel or backend failure)?

Hi,

This old version uses legacy technology which won't be supported much longer, and is why it may be returning the backend failure.

Please use
https://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/getForecast?query=pws:KTXAUSTI8

or for just the forecast,
https://www.wunderground.com/forecast/us/tx/austin/KTXAUSTI8
