Meteostick Antenna
« on: November 29, 2017, 01:37:02 AM »
I need a larger antenna for the Meteostick in order for it to pick up the signals reliably.
Does anyone have a recommendation for replacement of the wire? I can solder if necessary.

I would think just splicing a piece of wire (same Gauge) and running a longer piece would grab more signal.  Try that before soldering.

Yeah I had that idea, just didn't know if there was something else like a real antenna that could be soldered in.
Thanks :-)

let me know if it works.  I always thought that was a tiny antenna on mine.

Yes, it works.
I added about 4-5 inches of wire to it. Got a better signal, but now I need to figure out how to support it so it doesn't flop over...

I make these 2.4GHz antennas for my ESP8266 devices to extend the range. I then insert it into heat shrink tubing. Then into a drinking straw. This is to protect it and stop the end from pocking into my eye.
Might give you some ideas.  :-)
You might be able to hot glue the straw to the meteostick

Sounds like a great idea. I am curious how this has worked out. How much increase in signal were you able to achieve?

I can't quantify it, but it went from not latching onto a signal 3/5 times to receiving a steady signal, so pretty good.

If you can solder onto it, there is nothing stopping you from attaching a real antenna with gain if you know what your doing.

I may give it a try. My signals from the Davis ISS are good (-51 db), as shown from the Meteobridge RF meter, but I have a separate Anemometer Transmitter that is a little weak (-65 db). Thanks for the info.

You may want to look into getting some repeaters if you can afford it, that will help more than the antenna mod.
