Does OserverIP work with the WS-2000
« on: July 20, 2019, 10:22:23 PM »
The reason I am interested in this is it my understanding that the ObserverIP provides a web page of live data that can be parsed on the local network. I have done a lot of searching without finding the answer. Thank you in advance for your help.

The ObserverIP is not the hardware that you're looking for.  You should check out the Ecowitt GW1000.  That is much newer and more stable hardware.  Here is only one way to use it.

The answer is yes the ObserverIP works with the WS-2000. As in it is like a second console without a display and reads all the data from the same sensors.

But as StephenR0 has stated the Ecowitt GW1000 is a newer and better option than the ObserverIP. The GW1000 will see all your Ambient sensors also and more because it also sees other Ecowitt sensors like soil and larger rain gauge that Ambient does not [yet] sell.

Do keep in mind that if you get Ecowitt sensors that the WS-2000 from Ambient will not see them. Ecowitt consoles see Ambient and Ecowitt sensors but the opposite is not true. You can't see Ecowitt sensors with Ambient consoles.

There is no webpage on the GW1000 like on the ObserverIP. But the GW1000 has two other methods to send data that are better than parsing a webpage. The GW1000 can send data to a "Customized" server address in either WU protocol format or in Ecowitt protocol format. The GW1000 also has an API that for now is only available to the Meteobridge (soon to be available to other developers).

The GW1000 has a Live data that can be seen with a mobile app (WS View) when on the local network. You can also see 1 minute data on Ecowitt.net.

You can install the WS View app on a computer using Android emulator Noxplayer.

Thank you for the prompt answers, and the info on the GW1000. I appreciate it very much!

One last question: Does either of these devices have the ability to create a CSV based log file?

Not in and of themselves.  For that you will need to run some kind of server to accept their data and process it the in way that you want.  Welcome to programming!  :-)

The WS-2000 does automatically create CSV files on an SD card. But you can't read it via USB to the console nor via the network. You must pull the card out and copy the file on a computer.

If you want more easily automatically accessible CSV files I would probably use the GW1000 and WeeWx to generate them.

Thanks again for the info! I am new to the Ambient Weather equipment but not to weather stations. I enjoy a little programming and I am sure I will end up with a Bridge of some kind. The WeeWx seems to be a versatile and affordable solution for now. The Weather Station should arrive in a few days. I have a Windows Server running Apache and will continue to host my own weather site. I will start with an API based solution until I can afford a bridge of some kind. I have really enjoyed reading through the Ambient Weather section of the forum. Thanks again, folks!

Just a quick follow up to anyone interested in capturing data via the Live Data page on the OberserIP to a CSV file. This has been done before. I found this thread on the forum that does exactly what I need. This is done with a perl script...

https://www.weather-watch.com/smf/index.php/topic,64578.0.html

This should be perfect for my Windows Server/Apache configuration.  The Author of Weather Display has already coded support for this option in his program. So this is an inexpensive way to get live data from your ObserverIP.

The Perl script is fully functional on the WS-2000 using the Live Data page of the ObserverIP module. No bridge of any kind is needed, however, a PC of some kind is needed to run the script. In my case, it is my Windows Server/Apache webserver. The CSV file is standard and works well at archiving data. The Perl script is on a loop and you can set the refresh rate and location of CSV file. Once executed the script continues to run until you interrupt it. I am back up and running with my live weather web site other than some HTML editing to reflect the new hardware and WU change in the station ID. (AcuRite encrypted the network packets on their Hub and rendered all their equipment useless to me.) I am very happy to be with Ambient Weather now! Thank you for the answers to my questions and fulfilling my needs with the Ambient Weather hardware.

Sincerely,
Jack
