Winter 2014-2015
« on: November 16, 2014, 05:36:48 AM »
Last year:

Date, High, Low
Code: [Select]
15 53 44
16 69 53
17 75 55
18 62 34
19 50 33

Tornado outbreak on the 17th that produced several 2s and 3s.

This year, temps projected to be around 30 for highs with lows in the teens and a Winter Weather Advisory for 1-3" Sunday (16th)/Monday(17th).  Low temp record of 16 on the 16th is in jeopardy and maybe the low temp record of 12 on the 17th.

I read something about the typhoon last week in Alaska may have triggered the arctic outbreak. I'm @ 12 below zero (-24C) this morning and may bottom out lower at sunrise. Could be a record low for the day.

A likely scenario in view of the low temps being the exclusive province of the lower 48 much of last week while Alaska basked in higher temps.  Only now are the temps starting to return to a 'more normal' pattern.  Attached is todays list, where Valentine proudly sits at #4.

I posted info about that and said several times  that it was going to push cold air your way.

Well, instead of the threatened 3-5", we got somewhere between 1" and 2" depending on where you measure, but that's still 2 too much.

Still 2" not bad for this time of year.
Looking ahead over the plains it looks like the arctic express gets cut off and temps are going back to near normal, near 40 on Friday into the weekend.

Cold temperatures and snow across the Great Lakes in November is certainly nothing out of the ordinary, but this morning, a layer of ice was visible on parts of Lake Superior in Ashland, Wis.

While this may not seem unusual given the current stretch of unseasonably cold temperatures, it is actually several weeks earlier than normal.

The first sightings of ice on Lake Superior and the Great Lakes overall usually occur during the beginning to middle of December. However, a perfect combination of last season's record ice coverage, cooler summer temperatures, and an early blast of arctic air this fall has allowed for areas of ice to form earlier than normal for the second year in a row.

I think our lowest temp forecasted in the next 7 up here will be Friday night/Saturday morning with a low of -10°C/14°F. I think most of the people up here would like the folks in the Central US and Canada to keep the cold though haha. I'm not looking forward to the swing in temperatures coming after Saturday morning.

That's when you climb out the second floor window and dig down to the door haha. They got hammered last evening as those Lake Effect bands kept shifting through.
