Replacement Batteries for WS-1001 clone Maplin N23DQ
« on: July 23, 2017, 03:57:24 AM »
I need to replace my rechargeable batteries in my WS1001/N23DQ weather station. There is no specification on the batteries as to the Mah or type except that they do say NO Mercury or Cadmium.

SO what would you suggest as good batteries to replace the factory standard ones?

Hello

In 2015 I replaced mine with Duracell AA cost me about £10 inc pp I also bought AAA for the indoor sensor at the same time both are still running . https://www.amazon.co.uk/Duracell-2500mAh-Charged-Rechargeable-Batteries/dp/B00E3DVQFS

Great many thanks have ordered them, should get them tomorrow.

I am hoping it may solve my outdoor temp gauge giving strange reading when its damp.

Good there good, however it will not resolve the strange readings that's a fundamental design flaw . I dealt with that issue back in 2015 . Basically the condensation, dew, fog, rain all finds its way into the sensor compartment . This causes those strange erratic readings. I keep, saying to my self next time I go up,and clean mine which I do every three months weather permitting is to take some photos of how I fixed that issue . Basically clear silicon grease at the top of radiation shield where it meets the unit , the actual sensor circuit board is the culprit so I applied non conductive silicon grease all over the circuit board and appplied a thin layer of amalgating tape wrapped around the board and where thermistor sits on the circuit board i insulated the two small contact legs.

Basically what is happening when the dew or whatever builds up on the circuit board you end up with an open circuit , dew , water, condensation, fog can act as a conductor , I learnt this many years ago when building amateur radio antennas when fog was present and heavy rain the antennas would start becoming unresonant . Since doing that to the ws1001 in 2015 I don't get erratic readings during any of those weather conditions and I live 150 meters from the sea so I'm prone to regular fog and damp moist conditions. Confused ? Perhaps when I take the photographs it will be clearer to understand all you need is a steady hand ...it's not that difficult .

I replaced my sensors a few months ago due to a faulty Hum sensor. When you remove the shields, this is what you will see. The cable will be inside the housing. The black part is the Temp sensor and the white covered one the Humidity sensor.

Don't recall looking like that . Perhaps they addressed the issue in later models released or produced. Anyway did they address the gap at the top of radiation shield and the unit .
I was looking  at someone's ws1001 n23dq recently purchased  and yesterday in the U.K. It was raining  hard and they were showing 31c temp 28c dewpoint   100% humidity which lead me to believe the water problem  getting on or into, the circuit still,exists.. as those readings don't add up for a north east U.K. Based weather station unless it was an extreme period.

I have a WS-1200-ip, but the outdoor unit seems to be the same. Mine is 18 months old. I did not see any water getting into the shields. Where the sensors go from the inside of the unit to the outside into the radiation shield, it is sealed with silicone. Might be to keep water from the rain gauge running down there and unto the sensor. In the picture you can still see some of the white silicone that is left over after I pulled most of it off.

There are two screws at the bottom of mine that I had to remove. Take note of the order. The bottom two are solid. The next three have a hole in them.

Sorry you have lost me, so is there a total of 5 screws?

Looking at the other threads about this I presume it is not possible to get a replacement temp/dewpoint module?

Email Ed at Ambient, he hooked me up with a replacement as well as others. My warranty was expired.

Not sure he would help me as my unit is a clone sold by Maplin in the UK. Anyway what is the best way of contacting him.

Replaced batteries, gave the inside a good clean, noticed that the black temp sensor was touching the humidity sensor, so separated them and today with fine drizzle and 99% humidity the temperature is correct.
