Scanner Help
« on: February 03, 2010, 09:22:25 PM »
I was thinking that a scanner would be a better device than just a weather radio.

Scanners can have Skywarn freqs programmed, along w/ SAME tech. Now you're alerted, and have the field reports, plus EMA reports.

Anyone recommend a particular product?

Did some research.

1st - Portability?
2nd - type of system local emergency uses: analog, trunked, digital, conventional
3rd - Skywarn capable and SAME
4th - other freqs range: arcft, ham, mil, etc

The lower the microvolt for recvr, the better.

Right now looks like RS Pro-107 / 97, BC246T

Skywarn operates mid 140s, so why would I require a scanner that states Skywarn? Unless it's already banked.

I'm guessing that's just if you want the little button with the Skywarn logo on it.

When I head out to the Plains, I just manually program the Skywarn frequencies.  I get them from the Skywarn repeater GR3 placefile.

Thanks. That's what I thought.

I found their broadcst freqs on the AL Net.
I didn't know if they had a special hidden span of freqs that weren't avail to norm scnners.

They haven't gone digital yet?

So far, no...I have not seen any Skywarn frequencies trunking yet.  Heck, my local PD and FD aren't trunking either yet LOL

Thanks.

FYI. The PRO-107 has all known freqs. If you set it to SKYWARN group, you wouldn't have to worry about adding freqs.
