Wind Chill????
« on: January 05, 2009, 06:45:08 PM »
It is hard to have a wind chill when the anemometer is frozen.

A little freezing rain in Dallas today.  It does look funny when all of a sudden the wind speed goes to zero and stays there....

Has anyone else had their anemometer freeze????

Oh yeah... #-o

Had a pretty impressive (for NE Illinois) storm a few weeks back that left everything coated with about 1/2 inch of glaze. Since my main anemometer is up on a tower I opted to be safe and just wait...and wait until it finally melted.

A few other images here.

Yep, at least once or twice a year for a few hours to several days.  I've threatened for years to get some way setup to heat it but have not done it yet.

Happens to me several times every winter. I just wait until the weather warms up and it thaws out again.

I put a notation on my we site last winter but have no do so yet this winter.

Thanks,

Over the holidays central Illinois got hit with 2 ice storms. I made a long pole to gently tap the ice off the ane to free it up. It was interesting to see the long icicles hanging off the cups.

Have you noticed any unusual wind speed readings while it was frozen? Occasionally, when mine freezes up after a driving wind/freezing rain storm, I get fluctuating wind speed readings even though I can visually verify the cups aren't spinning. I suspect it must be internal water intrusion somewhere as the readings return to normal after a thaw and the anemometer dries out.

Mine was frozen for about 12 hours and the wind stayed at zero for the entire time.
