Reception issue on older console with 3.12 firmware
« on: January 21, 2015, 10:31:28 AM »
I wanted to wait 24 hours before posting this, but it appears that v3.12 on my 2006 vintage VP2 console resulted in reception problems yesterday.

The first indication was the #4 station temperature, then the Temp/Hum station. Later I lost the Davis wind set on station #2. Checking my other consoles/Envoys, there was no problem with any of the received signals on any transmitter. Only this 2nd VP2 console.

I have since reflashed to v1.90 and it has worked perfectly overnight. You can see that the ISS reception plot was much improved after I reflashed the console late yesterday morning. The severe dropouts to 30-40% range have stopped. I was seeing the same kind of numbers in the console reception diagnostic screens.

This comment in the v3.12 release notes is what prompted me to try this. They must have changed something that wasn't completely compatible with older hardware.

Firmware version 3.12

Fixed a bug in 3.00 that did not allow the ET alarm to be cleared.
Eliminates occasional WeatherLink communication issue when console is busy receiving a radio packet.

Well, after over a month of flawless operation this thing has made a liar out of me....
All dashes and a wacky barometer reading.
There is something else going on here.
The only good thing is that I got the console really cheap on eBay.
The reverting the firmware was probably just the 'reboot' of the console that got it back on track.
I reflashed to v3.12 again. I'll watch it for a while.

Sorry for the misinformation....

Maybe there's a reason you got it really cheap......

It was sold as "not working", so I consider myself fortunate that it works as well as it does.
It did have some bad solder joints at the logger connection that I reworked, as well as the processor.
Maybe I missed one somewhere.
It is a 2nd console, mounted right next to my original VP2. I use it primarily to be able to see the Davis wind set in real time, since the RM Young is on the "original" console.
