Geologists Say Big One Coming to Oklahoma
« on: March 23, 2015, 12:42:00 AM »
To me, gotta hope the next real big one happens to center well out in the middle of nowhere, so no town big or small gets the worst effects.

Here, the record setting 5.6 big one from November of 2011 only produced a light, gentle swaying motion for about 10 seconds with no damage.  But in the neighboring more rural county at the epicenter, the motion was faster and more violent, damaging dozens of homes.

Well, dang, 18 earthquakes took place Tuesday, 3/12/2015, with 3 of them in Kansas as reported by USGS. That's about as numerous as they get in a day. OGS had 20, all in Oklahoma. All were under 4.0 M. I try not to worry too much about them, but if an unusually strong one happens, like a 4.5, or greater, I'm going to be extra worried it could be the foreshock that comes before the big one. Considering the highly intense complacency and acceptance Oklahomans have developed toward the earthquakes, it's, no doubt, going to take a new record breaking big one to get the oil companies to try doing more to control them, unless they first stop their activity from the price of oil dropping to $20 a barrel.

As evidence of the complacency, little more than a hundred people showed up for the recent town hall meeting on earthquakes in OKC at Kerr-McGee Auditorium on the Oklahoma City University campus. Compare that to over 500 who showed up about a year ago for the same thing held in Edmond.

^ I'm glad to see they are finally doing something.  Oklahoma gets more mag 3's and 4's in a week than we get in a year.  And with the possibility of a bigger quake as a result of the fracking, all I can say is, get prepared.

Edit: Here is another good resource for earthquake preparedness.  It seems that the chance of a major quake hitting Oklahoma has been talked about before.

^ In the meantime, the quakes continue with the threat of a bigger one.  Every time I open my email, I see two or three notifications from USGS of quakes in Oklahoma.  Yesterday, I did a check on how many quakes we got of mag 2.5 and above in the last 7 days and guess what?  The total for all the US including Mexico, Canada, and Puerto Rico was 110, 53 of them occurred in Oklahoma.

I'm not sure which one of these threads is the most recent or relevant, but news today is the the OK High Court has OKayed a lawsuit against one of the companies doing the fracking.

Dang, another earthquake just happened in Stillwater, and it was definitely stronger than the 2.2 from last night that centered a mile from Stillwater. Even the news guy on TV Channel 4, who's 60 miles away,  just said he noticed it! It will be interesting to see how strong this one turns out.

Unlike the 2.2 quake, this one frightened and upset a lot of Stillwater people.  But USGS said it was just a 3.5 in magnitude centered under the west side of Stillwater.  But gives Stillwater people too good of an idea of what people living between Guthrie and Edmond have been going through lately. Hopefully, this isn't a sign a new hot spot for quakes is trying to form near Stillwater.  The quakes in the neighboring counties are far enough away so they don't make nearly as much of an impression.

Some Facebook comments from Stillwater about the 3.5 earthquake:

"The whole Walmart shook! I told my Kids it was momma's fury cause they wouldn't listen! Lol"

"That felt much bigger than a 3.5!! It shook like crazy on the 3rd floor of the life science building!!"

"Holy earthquake batman."

"Almost went under the desk."

"My apartment shook like crazy! Scared me for a second!"

"Felt really big all the way out here on Airport Road. This is a brick house and it shook the Crap out of it. Lol"

"It sounded like field artillery."

"HUGE quake just hit us in Stillwater! Three booms coming from far away and then in. I was on second floor of home and the whole place continued to move for FAR TOO LONG and felt like it was coming down. We have allowed them to get away with this too long. As I was reeling sideways I noticed our dog Berkeley leaping straight up in the air in alarm. Get those law suits in. It is all they understand."

"It really scared me. There was a loud explosion and the house shook. It lasted longer than other quakes that I have previously felt."

"One of my coworkers was in Hobby Lobby and a whole display of glass items fell and broke!"

"Hardest one we have felt downtown. Got to stop the disposal and injection wells."

"I was at a meeting at the Community Center & our huge, heavy table & all of us sitting there shook!!"

"I thought that things were going to start falling at the animal shelter, and you know we are all block and concrete. VERY scary."

"Was in the middle of seeing my very last patient. Underscored exactly why we are leaving Stillwater."

"Whoa, that was a big one at Boomer Lake, 12:15. We had one last night too that shook the house about 9:30 or so."

^ It may have been just a 3.5 but, it was only 5.5 km (3.4 miles) deep which is very shallow so, it would feel like it was a lot stronger and a lot more people would feel it over a larger area.

The Stillwater News Press gives it take of the court decision on its editorial page. http://www.stwnewspress.com/opinion/our-view-court-open-for-quake-lawsuits/article_87a2c93c-1fa6-11e5-8874-cb661d2c8e4a.html

One other thing about the earthquakes is they sometimes take place in the wee hours of the morning when most people are asleep. For instance, at 4:23 AM, Sat. morning on 7/11, there was a 3.8 earthquake 6 miles SSW of Stillwater. But don't see people commenting on it. If they're like me, they slept through it. It's frightening to think how much stronger an earthquake needs to be in the middle of the night before it can wake up a lot of people.

Funny I had a 3.3, 7 miles away and it did wake me up. Some felt it some didn't. I also think the depth of quake plays a role on how much is felt.

A lot has to do with soil structure if you feel an quake or not. There been several quakes in my area that people felt and we didn't because I am sitting on bedrock as to where they are sitting on fill. Couple quake only way we knew about the was the water in fish tank sloshing around.

It's frightening to think how much stronger an earthquake needs to be to 'wake people up'.

A 4.4 earthquake hit northwest Oklahoma Monday afternoon.  It was stronger than usual.  I didn't sense it and was glad it was well away from me.  The 3.5 quake quake that hit here under the city limits several weeks ago was disturbing enough.

Well, we just had a 4.0 hit very close to me a few minutes ago.  It felt like a freight train going by.  Still trying to find just how close it was.  It wasn't strong enough to trigger my QCN sensor though.  We've had two aftershocks so far.

Edit: My earthquake page finally got updated.  The epicenter was 5 miles from me.

I hope everyone and everything is ok around there.

It looks like everyone made it through okay.  It made the morning news.  We have had about a dozen aftershocks so far, 4 of them 2.0+.  This was just a little reminder that we live in earthquake country.

So far, there have been no reports of any damage or injuries from this earthquake.

Viewers reported items falling off tables and walls, while one Facebook follower said that her bird fell of it's perch.
