Title: Help with New Weather Station...BUT..sadly, needs to be NON WIRELESS
Post by: TharSheBlows on September 23, 2017, 08:55:20 PM
Due to data caps on my internet satellite service, sadly, I cannot run a wireless weather station.
I am looking for any opinions on possible solutions. I want to have the rain gauge, wind speed(I DO get gusts OVER 75MPH at times), temperature, relative humidity, dewpoint, easy to setup, I'm all thumbs with hand tools.
Basically, a higher-end beginner's station will make me very happy. Rain & Wind & Temp are my main needs.
I like to tweet my local Weather guy on KTVU, and, with more accurate information, we'll both have better experiences.
Thanks in advance

Calvin,

First of all, welcome to WXFORUM!

Perhaps you have a misconception of what wireless means as it pertains to weather stations. For the most part, being wireless normally indicates that the remote sensors communicate "wirelessly" with a central console or display unit of some kind. Weather stations come in both "wired" and "wireless" configurations. There are advantages and disadvantages to both types with some systems being a mix of both methods.

If you want to upload your weather data to a website or some other recipient then that data would be sent via an Internet connection.

You need to let us know exactly how you want to utilize your weather data. At that point we can begin to formulate a better response to your inquiry.

Thank you. At this stage, not uploading to my computer will be fine.

Good question...I'll go up to $400 +/- a bit..rather have quality that lasts, than made in China junk.

Well, it is all pretty much made in China.... but Davis is your go-to at your price point.  Contact www.scaledinstruments.com for best prices on Davis.

Ok...thanks a ton..I just emailed their site.
Does a unit need to be in a shade box, if so, does Davis have that?
I would assume the rain bucket stays out, duh, not in box.
I cannot use the side of my trailer for mounting..too much sun/shade movement..
prefer to mount in yard, on poles, with best accuracy of measurements.

As Bushman said, check out a Davis System at Scaled Instruments. Davis are not made in china.

No, the Davis does not go into a box, check out some photos in the Station Photography Section.

Or, even better, check out Leticia's video on the Davis Vue at:

The VP2 model is very broadly similar, but obviously is a more sophisticated model.

Would you upload to a website like this: http://www.weatherelement.com/slocofarmbureau for about a megabyte a month?

Davis are not made in china.
They're made in Hayward, Ca., but I'm sure some parts are imported; I believe Sensirion is Swiss.

Interesting though that Davis no longer claims "Made in USA".  You can be certain that some of it is from Chinese factories.

Interesting to know what your internet satellite cap is as some systems really don't use much bandwidth. Is 2mb per day (max) or around 50mb per month excessive on your service?

Really? Why does their own web site say "Place of Origin, United States?" Please explain.

It says origin because thats where it originated from, it does not mean it has to be made there though ;)

Where does it say that Chinese company makes Davis products?  They say they are involved in import/export and that they distribute Davis products, among other well-known corporations.  http://www.pjkcn.com/english/About.Asp  How do you know they don't just distribute them in Asia?  It's not even clear to me from what I saw on the site that they even manufacture anything, though they talk about their "friendship" with "domestic manufacturers", which are listed under "Domestic production", if I understand correctly.  That would also help explain why it says the country of origin is the US if they don't manufacture them there.

It has been my understanding that Davis is, at the least, assembled in Hayward, though at least some parts are made overseas.  I just looked at two ISS PCB's from an original VP that say "Made in USA" on them, though I'm sure I've seen some circuit boards that said they were made in Singapore and/or the Philippines if I recall.  It must have been when I took the console apart, or maybe on the ISS I have in service now.  I can't recall anything made in China, except probably the power supply, but they could be outsourcing more now.

Both my Console and ISS PCB has Made in USA with Imported and US parts. By law if it says Made in the USA, it has to be made with 51% + USA Parts, go look it up. Also Engineering and Tech Support and MFG is 100% USA. Not too shaaby in 2017.

EDIT To ADD: To be fair, here you go  https://www.ftc.gov/tips-advice/business-center/guidance/complying-made-usa-standard

If ya'll think if Davis is going to hood wink you with labeling, they can get into a lot of trouble.

Actually the law states "All or substantially all" of it must be US made to claim a true "Made in USA" label.  And the inclusion of critical pieces like sensors etc. clearly negates that claim.  I am certain my old box (hiding in the basement somewhere) has a big MADE IN USA sticker on it.  New ones do not.

BTW, doesn't Rainwise claim Made in USA?

It is very clear from SHENZHEN PENGJIN TECHNOLOGY CO., LTD. web site that they never make any claim to any manufacturing of any Davis parts or equipment.

If that site indicates it's made by Szechuan Penguin in China, then this site must indicate it's made by Prodata in the UK. http://www.weatherstations.co.uk/vp2_intro.htm

Wherever mine was made in '06, it still works, and works well. Hellofalot of others brands surely can't say that.

Hey guys, I think this thread has been hijacked by a way off-topic discussion. Let's move the discussion to another chit-chat, if it needs to be discussed further.
