to know that when you can hear thunder you are supposed to go indoors. "If you are close enough to hear the thunder, you are close enough to be struck."

I can't say as I know anyone that does that.  Most stay out working until it's raining too hard to see.

Raining -- OK.  Work outside with thunder in the area?  I've never known anyone, friends or co-workers who would do that.

I knew one.   We was out on an antenna job up on about 30' of tower.  Storm and rain starts rolling in so I climb down and get in the truck.  My coworker wanting to get done stays up there.  Only some light rain and distant thunder for a couple of minutes then FLASH BOOM!!  I was afraid to look up but did and found my coworker climbing down rather quickly.  As he get's in the truck he exclaims "That lightning hit just across the road over on the hill!"  I replied something to the effect at least it got you down off there without my going up to pry your cold dead hands from the rungs of the tower to do it.   #-o

I'm sure the truck smelled.

Why am I reminded of the scene in Caddyshack with the Bishop on the golf course?

That's no surprise. It's like the most lightning prone state in the country which means people get more used to it and are less likely to take precautions. It's a sad bit of human nature.

I believe an open body of water, such as a lake or pond, is the last place I'd want to be before, during, or just after a storm.  :!:

Yeah. On open water with lightning around, you're literally a sitting duck. [-o<
