how do WU get their day highs and night lows?
« on: February 03, 2010, 05:30:34 PM »
http://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/getForecast?query=zmw:00000.90.03763&hourly=1&yday=35&weekday=Friday

looking at this hourly forecast the day high for Friday is 10 and night low is 2. ('forecast summary at bottom of page)

but when you look at the hourly data i can only see max=10 and min=6.

even when i include the Saturday morning forecast the min=5?

how do they get the 2 min for their summary???

I've also noticed the "hourly" forcasted mins and maxes often are off by a few degrees when compared to the "summary" max and min forecasts.  Not only on WU, but Accuweather.com, and the US NWS.  My guess is the "summary" is for whatever nearby Asos weatherstation, usually an airport.  The hourly forecast may be extrapolated from the summary, based on your exact coordinates/elevation.  This is just my guess why there is a discrepancy.  Anyone have any better ideas?

just wondered if anyone knows how they select their max and mins?

0000-2359?

0600-0559?

0900-0859?

From looking at my data online at WU, I'm assuming it's 0000-2359.  The max/min resets at midnight when you look at the daily summary.

It's not different than the point forecast by the NWS, the temps will vary depending on the exact area you're looking at. The summary would be from the closest official reporting station.
