Image Salsa Alternative
« on: January 23, 2017, 01:10:57 AM »
Does anyone know of an alternative to Image Salsa? A program that will grab images, rename them and FTP push them to a website?

I used Webcam 7 with my Dlink cams and use it now with my Hikvision.

I believe I used to have it rename the images and yes, it'll FTP them also.

Lucky for the OP, the 935 supports command line image grab:  http://IPADDRESS:PORT_NUMBER/image.jpg (where IPaddress is 192.1....whatever and leave port blank unless you assigned a specific port).  Use an FTP PUT command to pop that on the server.  the image name is ALWAYS image.jpg and not appended with a timestamp that messes it up.

Is Image Salsa stopping support, no longer available, or gotten expensive?  I wonder why you are seeking an alternative?  Just curirous.  I've just used a version I bought many years ago to assemble .jpgs into a movie, but don't do the web cam stuff.

I  have received a message "Image Salsa has encountered a problem and needs to close" on a regular basis for years. I have received it several PCs.

The problem with Image Salsa and Movie Salsa is that there is no longer any support or hope that there ever will be any new releases of these products. The developer has totally abandoned the products. Thus, the reason they are now being offered as FREE downloads.

However, having said that, the products still perform quite nicely. I have used them for many years and do not have any issues with them other than the fact that I have never been able to get V2.x to run on my systems. I wanted to move to v2.x because it supposedly supported at least 2 webcams simultaneously. Since v2.x wouldn't even run on my system I was never able to confirm that claim. The developer tried to help me on this issue but then I got lost in his abandonment of the product. Both products worked fine with a single webcam and I rarely ever ran into problems with either of them.

The beauty of Image Salsa was that it allowed a user to overlay VWS based data elements directly onto the image being produced. It also has a streaming capability. Movie Salsa gives you the ability to produce a movie file of the time-lapsed photos and overlay data with lots of options.

However, as a result of the non-support of the product and inability to get v2.x to run, I have essentially abandoned both products.

I still use Image Salsa to resize and overlay my static webcam images, as you can see by my signature and avatar.  The images are sent by FTP to a directory on my main-old weather computer that hosts Cerberus FTP Server.  Webcam7 is currently doing the FTPing from the HikVisions to the server while the StarDot PatioView ftp's reliably on its own.  Image Salsa then regularly overlays these images with the appropriate text and resizes them before saving them with appropriate new names on a network-mapped directory on my new-main weather computer where they are then uploaded to my website.  Here is the Patio View and here is the Street View from the HikVisions.

It's not bullet proof, but it works.  When it stops creating a file for me oftentimes just saving under a new name and adjusting the downstream scripts is all that's needed to get things rolling again.

It is too bad the developer did not make the source open when he stopped support.

Hello.
I am new to using a cam to send my picture on WU.

I have a DLINK 5020L and a software call Weather Cat that I use on my Imac.
What would be the software compatible with Apple that could replace the Windows soft Salsa.

I have a very hard time finding an URL address for my DLINK so I could send live photo or video. I know that if I use http//192.168.x.xxxx and my admin name and password, the video will come alive in my browser. But if I write that line in the URL tab in the WeatherCat software, the test window will show noting. I talked with Dlink support and they tell me there is no way to find a URL on a Dlink wich I doubt.

Anybody has a trick to help me?
Thanks a lot.

Ah yes, DLink "support".  LOL...   Here is the full set of local URLs to access your cam:

DCS-5020L - http://IPADDRESS:PORT_NUMBER/image.jpg
DCS-5020L - http://IPADDRESS:PORT_NUMBER/image/jpeg.cgi
DCS-5020L - http://IPADDRESS:PORT_NUMBER/mjpeg.cgi
DCS-5020L - http://IPADDRESS:PORT_NUMBER/mjpeg.cgi?user=[USERNAME]&password=[PASSWORD]&channel=[CHANNEL]
DCS-5020L - http://IPADDRESS:PORT_NUMBER/video.cgi
DCS-5020L - http://IPADDRESS:PORT_NUMBER/video.cgi?resolution=[WIDTH]x[HEIGHT]
DCS-5020L - http://IPADDRESS:PORT_NUMBER/video.cgi?resolution=VGA
DCS-5020L - http://IPADDRESS:PORT_NUMBER/video/mjpg.cgi

Obviously you use your local IP.  Whcihc should be static.

Hi Thanks for the info
If I use your info like the line below:
DCS-5020L - http://IPADDRESS:PORT_NUMBER/mjpeg.cgi?user=[USERNAME]&password=[PASSWORD]&channel=[CHANNEL]

it does translate to me as

http://192.168.0.60:80/mjpeg.cgi?user=admin&password=XXXchalet&channel=?????

So my Port is 80, my ip is OK (from my cam setup), My user and pass are ok but as far as channel goes then, I do not know what to write as I do not see where I can get this info. Do you have a clue?

Thanks again I very appreciate your help

A few things:  80 is the default stream port internal to your camera so you can skip it or keep it in. Channel defaults to 1 AFAIK but again, check the syntax.  I think the channel select allows you to have multiple concurrent streams. I don't have a sample of your camera here but for my 932L this streams video nicely for me.

http://username:password@192.168.1.NN/video/mjpg.cgi   where UID and PWD are yours of course and ditto for you IP (NN).

Kindda weird.

Here is what I input with your help (with modif for security reason of course)
http://admin:4x1cxaxex@192.168.0.XX/video/mjpg.cgi

Blank screen on the vidéo test.

I have been working more than 10 hours on 3 days on that problem.

Thanks, if someone else has info on those Dlink 5020L and Weathercat (free for 14 days by the way for the Mac)

John
The txt in the screen says:Error from webcam, Impossible to read file.

I assume you have looked at the Weathercat manual?  Assuming you followed the directions, you might want to talk to the developer.  Maybe they expect a certain type stream.  BTW, it is simpler to start with a still image rather than motion video.  Or it could be that darn Mac. :)

FWIW I tested the raw video streams on several Dlink models I have here up to H264 via VLC portable and they all stream live.  So my bet is on Weathercat being the issue. Or that darn Mac.  LOL

Ok I will write to the developer, I did read the user manual but it is most written in a simple language and not referring to any kind a specific problem.

Ho! by the way, I have 3 Mac and no more gray hair since I switched.

Thanks a lot for your precious help.

John

Hello Bushman.

I finally obtained an image with this:
http://admin:471xxx@192.168.x.xx/video/mjpg.cgi

The funny thing is, the image seem to be still but the info over it: wind, temp etc... is updating at regular pace.

I even use my control on the cam to look elsewhere but I still get the same background picture. Very strange.

I input another IP since I have 4 cam but the first one is always showing like there is a buffer in the program who keep the info. I erased the line but still get an image.

I guess my Mac is full of Gremlins #-o

A long shot here but is your password more than 8 characters?  Some Dlink firmwares do not support long passwords.

I have 9 digits.

My 4 cams has work perfectly with that password for the past year.

It seems that it is the weather software who is acting strangely on that. The developper gave me the same info as yours concerning the code with the IP and pass...

Right now, it is dark outside, my soft has not change it's image except for the temperature info. If I look at my Dlink cam soft, it is dark outside. It look like the image is frozen into space.  Klingon? Gremlins?

Will continue the search. I will try to reduce the password.

Thanks

Like I said - darn Macs!  LOl  Sorry I can't be of more help.  Is your camera FW up to date?  Try refreshing it.  If you can find a VLC equivalent on the Mac try to see if you can stream the video.  That is how I tested mine.
