Is it possible to have remote access to the /public/ from outside your own network?

If your router forwards tons of ports (the ones used for SMB) to the Meteohub, this will work.
But from a security perspective you should be reluctant to make the SMB service available in the Internet.

Doc is right:  not a good idea.  But you could easily set up a VPN inside your network (OpenVPN or PiVPN ) on a Raspberry pi and access the MH box via that device.  Cheap and secure.

Some ASUS routers provide VPN servers built in.

Good idea.  More costly than RPi though and generally needs a paid VPN.  OpenVPN can more easily use a free service (like Tor)
