http://www.engadget.com/2016/02/29/raspberry-pi-3/  Available NOW (well, if you can find stock from the first run) for about the same price as the Pi 2.

Who are MCM?

It's an acronym I'm not familiar with.  But rather than run the expensive add ons that do nothing for $80, I'm interested in your source.  Have you had good luck with them and their other stuff like add ons if one needs them?

Thx.  Dale

Thanks, Jachym.

There are so many acronyms and then when those who discuss this a lot get rolling, they know all the suppliers and stuff.

Thanks, I'll go looking.

They are sold out already in Canada so I will wait for the next batch.  But I still have 3 Model 2s on which I can play!

Odroid is an up and comer. If I recall the GPIO pins are the same as the Pi.  Also there is the Hummingboard https://www.solid-run.com/freescale-imx6-family/hummingboard/ and the Beagleboard x15 http://beagleboard.org/x15.

Interesting thing about Odroid is its cost:  the Hummingboard will run as much as some Intel miniATX-type systems.  All-in-all though, lots of options!  I can see any of these acting as an incredible wx platform once the reception from the ISS is nailed down.

Please forgive my ignorance.  I am very new at all this.
I have not yet purchased a weather station but will soon.  My brother has (or will very soon) an extra raspberry pi3 board.  It looks like it can be used to receive data from the station and upload it through the router to Weather Underground, CWOP, and other sites.

My main question is:  Is there an advantage to it having WiFi and Bluetooth?  Does that mean it will send the data to my laptop wirelessly? If so what software will turn my laptop into a console? (I don't mean a personal website, I'm not ready to do that, but software that would do the same job as a console?)

Is there other hardware, firmware, or software that would be necessary?

What other functions will the pi3 board do, concerning weather data?

How would I make it compatible with Fine Offset stations?

The main advantage I see in having onboard wifi is to make it easier to connect to a network rather than playing witnh USB adapters etc.  BT allows easy connection to other devices (like phoens).  As for doing what you want, it is kida complcated but would be fun.  http://www.susa.net/wordpress/2012/08/raspberry-pi-reading-wh1081-weather-sensors-using-an-rfm01-and-rfm12b/  Once you have a text  file you could BT  or Wifi it to your laptop where a template like Jacym's Meteotemplate etc. could ingest it and display it on the laptop.  Google is your friend my friend!

Love the Pi.. I have one Model B running WeeWX, two Model 2s (one running a dshield honeypot, one running the Unifi controller for my home WiFi) and two Model 3s (just got from Amazon via Canakit).  Lots of inexpensive toys to play with :)

Ken, just an FYI:  While Canakit via Amazon is OK, next time checkout www.buyapi.ca  Out of Ottawa and they ship to the US  MUCH cheaper!  I have bought from both and Buyapi is better. (Stupid wifi adapter from Canakit is a PITA)  Oh, and you Yanks ordering in US dollars get  these things for dirt cheap!

For me, with Amazon Prime, the shipping is free and 2-day (sometimes one day, due to local stocking in nearby Nevada).  Price is the same for the device, and I usually get one of the power supply warts too (5V 2.5A) along with the heat sinks and a case.  Bought all my Pi devices via CanaKit on Amazon that way :)

Cool.  I buy power supplies in bulk and with a heatsink kit (alu) that is 7 bucks.  Free shipping.  I found the PS costs stupid for the exact same device.
