Raw weather data vs Raw APRS data
« on: September 02, 2018, 06:00:07 PM »
When looking at my station on Findu.com I see two similar links on the left column:

Raw APRS data
Raw weather data

What is the difference? Seems like the same information and data (using a different fonts). I think Raw weather data is what CWOP receives from my station and Raw APRS data is what CWOP sends to the APRS network, right? Please confirm or correct me if I'm wrong here.

What is the point of having both of these? Isn't it redundant? In what situation would one be different than the other?

I sent off an email to Steve who runs FindU. Here is his response:

If you send nothing but weather data there will be no difference. But an aprs weather station may send beacons, messages, telemetry and more, so the aprs data includes everything.

Steve

Good to know. I guess for our weather purposes it doesn't matter.

Galfert,

I am an amateur radio operator (a.k.a. Ham) and I have what is called a digipeater/igate/weather box connected to both the Internet and my 2 meter VHF radio.

Here is a sample of the raw APRS data for this station (KE8DAF-13):

Code: [Select]
KE8DAF-13>APMI06,TCPIP*,qAS,KE8DAF::KE8DAF-13:PARM.Vin,Rx1h,Dg1h,Eff1h,A5,O1,O2,O3,O4,I1,I2,I3,I4
KE8DAF-13>APMI06,TCPIP*,qAS,KE8DAF::KE8DAF-13:UNIT.Volt,Pkt,Pkt,Pcnt,None,On,On,On,On,Hi,Hi,Hi,Hi
KE8DAF-13>APMI06,TCPIP*,qAS,KE8DAF::KE8DAF-13:EQNS.0,0.079,0,0,10,0,0,10,0,0,1,0,0,0,0
KE8DAF-13>APMI06,TCPIP*,qAS,KE8DAF::KE8DAF-13:BITS.11111111,KE8DAF Telemetry
KE8DAF-13>APMI06,TCPIP*,qAS,KE8DAF:T#073,167,000,000,100,000,00000000
KE8DAF-13>APMI06,TCPIP*,qAS,KE8DAF:@060227z4525.03N/08348.63W_353/003g012t063r000p017P017h91b10204L000WX3in1 weather
KE8DAF-13>APMI06,TCPIP*,qAS,KE8DAF:@060227z4525.03N/08348.63WrWX3in1Plus2.0 U=12.5V,T=75.2F

The 2nd line from the last has the weather data, the last line has internal temperature and voltage for the unit called a "Wx3in1".
If another APRS transmitter sends packets that is received by my radio, it will also show up in this raw data. (with that station's call sign and some other parameters)
You are only seeing a fraction of what is going on in APRS land.
If you go to aprs.fi and enter your location (or pan around) you can see a myriad of these stations and trackers all over the world. The icons that show "Wx" are weather stations including the CWOP ones. You can also view raw data on aprs.fi.

Wow! That is neat. Cool map. I sort of had an idea it was used for radio transmission of weather and I had briefly read that tracking was possible but I didn't know or understand how. So in many ways I had no idea APRS did so much more. It's like I just took the Red Pill. I'm in the Matrix.

Thank you so much!

EDIT (almost 2 years later): It's funny reading some of my old posts how little I knew just two years ago.
