Klystron 9
« on: July 09, 2011, 01:15:39 AM »
They rolled it out in JAN 2009 but I came across this page from the local Tampa news channel:

Bay News 9 has made a huge leap forward in providing you with the most accurate weather forecasts in the Bay area.

In January 2009, the station unveiled Klystron 9, the most advanced, most powerful, highest resolution broadcast weather radar in the world.

Bay News 9 chief meteorologist Mike Clay said Klystron 9 is more accurate than any other weather radar at any TV station anywhere.

"This is the biggest advance in radar since Doppler," Clay said. "Dual-pol Doppler, which we installed in October 2007, was the first step, but this was the full gamut of the radar we were after."

Your link is dead this morning--gives a '404' error.

Link is working now.  ;)

I thought it was kind of ironic that they are using the name Klystron 9:grin:

From the Urban Dictionary ( http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Klystron%209 )

Quote
Klystron 9

Any machine or device that is totally useless but sounds important solely based on it's name.
An overly complex and imaginary device that pretends to have the ability to predict weather.

The name, Klystron 9, was stolen from a cheap science fiction novel from the 1950's. In that novel Klystron 9 was a planet in the Holloway Galaxy and was inhabited by the Ruechels.

Even the name Klystron itself is getting dated going back to it's development in the 1939.  Although outside of electronics and radio tv techs and engineers it probably does not register with the general public.  Still though you of thought they could have came up with something more modern sounding without the tags of yesterday year.

I'm certain it will be something on the order of:

"Now for a look at channel (insert # here) Exclusive-Dual Pol, PinPoint, Terrain Eradicating, Ultra Super Duper High Precision Klystron Enhanced Doppler Radar!"
(Restrictions may apply, Radar not available in all markets and subject to the interpretation of our on-camera weather personalities....(batteries not included!))  :-)

I can't wait!  Or they will start reporting this: "Research shows Channel X's new radar is responsible for the worsening learning at our schools and may be causing a population explosion among rats and cockroaches!!" ](*,)
