Communication problem
« on: April 02, 2008, 11:01:56 PM »
I just changed the console batteries on my Vantage Pro 2 console. I am using a USB connection. When I use the "Auto Detect" setting to find the correct Com port I get the message "No station could be found". Any ideas on what might be wrong? I'm not a computer wiz so please speak slowly.

Hi Leo!

Did you have the AC adapter plugged into the console when you changed the batteries?  Sounds like the data logger might have locked up in the process.  Maybe a full power down of the console without the batteries and pulling the data logger out and reinserting while powered down might solve it.  Also might want to try clearing your data logger's archive.

Hi Mark,

Thanks for your suggestions. No I did not have the AC adapter plugged in when I changed the batteries. I tried removing the batteries, pulling the data logger out, reinserting the data logger and then the batteries with no luck. How do I clear the data logger archive? I tried clicking on "Setup", "Clear" and then checked the box that said "Clear Archive Memory" and got a message that read "Weatherlink tried to open a com port that doesn't exist on this system. Please examine your Com Port settings".

Sorry Leo, I was thinking of another problem regarding clearing the archive.   You will not be able to do that until you get communication back with the station. :-|

I think the preferred method is to have the station on AC power when you change the batteries.  I have the serial version instead of the USB version.  Did you get a little test jumper with WeatherLink and the data logger?  With the serial version I have a test jumper I can plug in to test if it is a computer com port problem or a datalogger issue if I have problems finding the com port.

What we have here is a failure to communicate!

Did you follow:

Console Maintenance

Changing Batteries

Use this procedure to change console batteries without losing any stored
weather data or console configuration settings.

1. Plug in the AC adapter or, if the AC adapter is not present, enter Setup
Mode by pressing DONE and then the down arrow
.

Entering Setup Mode makes sure the station isn’t writing any data to
memory when power is removed.

Doesn't help now, but might explain what happened...

Just call up Davis support--they should be able to help you...

Also... under "the manual is your friend"-- sometimes:

COMMUNICATIONS
PROBLEMS
? Why can't the WeatherLink Software “communicate” with the WeatherLink?

If you are experiencing difficulty establishing communication between the
weather station and the WeatherLink Software, start by checking the weather
station's own diagnostics. To do this, you must remove all power to the
weather station and then restart the weather station by restoring power (with
the WeatherLink still attached). You should hear three beeps, each of which
occurs when the weather station passes one of its diagnostic tests. The first
beep occurs after approximately one second, the second after approximately 8
seconds, and the third after approximately 22 seconds. If you do not hear one
or more of these beeps, contact Davis Instruments at 510-732-7814.

If you hear all three beeps, see “Finding the Correct Serial Port” on page 12 for
instructions on checking you standard serial ports. If this identifies a serial
port other than the one you selected in station setup, try connecting to the
WeatherLink again.

If you still cannot connect or if the loopback test identifies the serial port you
already have selected, attempt to eliminate the following possibilities. If you
have questions on how to proceed, it is recommended that you contact your
PC vendor or PC technical support.

You have a hardware device conflict.

Your serial port uses a non-standard IRQ line.

Your serial port is defective.

The loopback connector or the WeatherLink adapter plug is bad.

? How do I select the correct serial port?

If you can use the serial port in question with another program, simply determine
the serial port to which that program is set. Otherwise, see “Finding the
Correct Serial Port” on page 12 for instructions.

Yeah I definitely messed up when I didn't enter the SetUp mode before changing the batteries. I'll give Davis a call. Thanks everyone for your suggestions.

I have had the same problem.

I took out all power, unhooked the data logger, disconnected it from the computer and shut down the computer.

Then, hooked everything back up and restarted.

Then, after the station was loaded, I searched for the correct com port.

It works most of the time. Once in a while the data connection is lost and I have to restart the computer.

I may have to go back to a serial port.  There are many posts about that.

Yeah ... the usb datalogger seems to cause a lot of acid reflux. Many of us, myself included, were bitten by that bug. (I should have checked this forum before I bought my usb logger. Swapped it for the serial and never regretted it.)

I've been thinking of hosting a party where we can all gather 'round and toss our usb data loggers into the bonfire.  I'm sure those of us who were bitten by this could all use a sense of satisfaction and closure....and the sacrifice to the weather gods might bring continued good luck to those who somehow managed to avoid the problem.

Or... just send them to me as backups, since I've been running with the USB successfully for a few years now...  =D>
