Anyone Built a WRF Model?
« on: March 12, 2016, 12:38:24 AM »
Has anyone here on the forum ever tried to create their own WRF weather model? I have not, but it is on my list of things to do hopefully in the next couple of summers. Definitely takes the "Having your own custom weather model" idea to a whole new level!  8-)

Sounds like a cool idea but how are you going to power it? by power I mean what type of computer are you going to run it on? These models can get very CPU intensive. The site shows you how to run the model but not in real-time.

Not to discourage you in anyway, I think it could be done I am just curious how you would do it.

Some things that come to mind.

1.) You could run the model inside a cloud like amazon, but I would imagine the cost could be high.
2.) You could build yourself a supercomputer with a few dozen raspberry pi, but with the 100mb lan you might not be able to pull data fast enough.
3.) You could build one wicked home server to drive it but the lights might dim when you fire it up. :)

I think it would be great to have your own local model running in your town. You would than have to be labeled as an uber weather nerd and we would all bow down to your total awesome weather model.

Either way I have some knowledge about computer servers and numerical prediction models (mostly WRF although I started with MM5) so lets see where this conversation takes us.
