Okay, for the last 36 hours or so it's been pretty windy here with steady 20-25mph winds with gusts over 30

There hasn't been any rain or snow but I'm getting HUGE rainfall readings. It's reading about 46" since last night.

My 5 in 1 is mounted on a 2x4 and it does wobble a bit when it's really windy.

So is the rain gauge loose or broken?

Your rain gauge is probably just fine. Wind driven rocking or vibration is a well known cause of false rain readings. You may need to use guy lines on your 2x4, or replace it with a rigid steel pipe.

The rain gauge is like a seesaw and if your 5-in-1 is rocking, it can cause the seesaw to tip and result in false rain readings. How it works is when the one side of the seesaw fills up with rain, it tips and you have a rain reading. It sounds like you have too much movement going on.
