Third-party solar and/or UC sensors for Davis VP2?
« on: November 26, 2016, 08:20:33 AM »
Given the price of Davis's solar and UV units, has anyone successfully used a third-party replacement for either or both, especially a plug-and-play?

Davis support tells me they would have to meet these specs:
Quote
You probably could as long as they have the same output.
Solar:
I/O Specifications
Green wire. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Output (0 to +3VDC); 1.67 mV per W/m2
Red & Black wires . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Ground
Yellow wire . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . +3 VDC ±10%; 1mA (typical)
Temperature Coefficient . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . +0.067% per °F (+ 0.12% per °C)
UV:
I/O Specs
Green wire. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Output (0 to 2.5VDC); 150 mV per UV Index, 364 mV per MED/hour
Black & Red wires . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Ground
Yellow wire . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . +3V ±10%, 2.4 mA

Barring that, I'll need to go with units that WeeWX can read directly; any pointers there?

Some years ago here in the UK there used to be a solar sensor which worked with a Davis VP 1 or 2, I had one although sadly it got destroyed by a builder when having work done. I now have a Davis one as the UK manufacturer went out of business prior to my builder having butter fingers!

UV is harsh on sensors, especially, ironicly, the UV sensor
and the 3rd party sensor tended to report lower and lower values over time
(even the Davis sensor has been prone to that problem (not as bad and that issue I think has been improved))
