While we did break the all-time snow record in Anchorage and several other places, even more interesting (from a weather station perspective) were the wind storms. This last season I saw the most storms with hurricane force winds since moving up here. During one stretch we had five storms in a row during about a 3 week period. Like getting hit by one hurricane after another for almost a month! My station recorded it's highest gust ever of 94.8 mph this last December.

Thanks to everyone for all of your kind comments!

Anchorage, Alaska - Back online!
« Reply #7 on: June 16, 2012, 03:30:50 PM »
After much debate that I might be opening up a can of worms, I decided to move my site into it's own root level domain rather than have it hang out in a sub directory of my photography site. After adding an add-on domain into my cPanel, I was completely shocked and surprised at several things:

  • that the domain alaskaweatherwatch.com was even still available at all.
  • adding it into cpanel was a snap.
  • how easy it was to copy all of my site files over into the new domain via cPanel.
  • that everything actually still works!

Other than a few absolute URLs in  some of the configuration files, the relative URLs throughout the site kept everything working flawlessly. The most tedious process was probably changing all of the ftp settings in each of my applications (cumulus, vws, sebectec, dreamweaver, etc) since each seems to have it's own little idiosyncracies (add ftp. to the host name or not, etc), so each was a bit different. Also, to my surpise all of the hit counters, site meters, revolver maps etc still work flawlessy - even the who's online PHP script and page still works because the MySQL database is still in the same relative path to the add-on domain as it was in the main domain! And after setting up a 301 redirect from the old location to the new domain, the switchover seems to be a non-event with the search engines and any external links to my site from other places.

About the only wierd thing I can't figure out is that the add-on domain feature seems to drop the www in the address bar, though you still reach the site whether you type in the www or not.

Bottom line - everything is back online and seems to be working just fine now at:

Derek,

I pride myself on reading every post on this web site so I'm sure I've seen this thread but not really studied it. I guess I thought it was just another cookie cutter from first glance. But, as they say, upon further review, I am VERY impressed. I think I like the Steel Gauges best. I was very interested in your "all-time low" being "only" -13.1 F. That other Alaskan, Scalphunter (John), complains that the Davis thermometer won't go below -40 F, but it's a big state so I'm sure he needs that.

I'll be watchin' you.

George

Looks like Derek may have had some strong winds there. I see a 70 mph gust last night
and think he may not have power since his site is not updating right now.

Akkkk   19 degrees!   The record low here for today is 31.

19 degrees is like 0200 in the morning. Just does not exist to me.

Believe it or, but after a while 19 degrees actually isn't too bad. And if when it warms up above 30 in the winter that's T-Shirt weather! There have been times I've been working up on the Dalton Hwy at -45F (in full arctic gear), then gotten in the truck and driven up over the pass on the slope where it was only -20F. The difference was astounding, and I really was out and about without a jacket.

All of this is without wind of course.

Unusually great job done on the site.  The graphics give it a great Alaska feel.  The site looks to be a big one and, no doubt, took a lot of dedicated work.
