Animate GRLevel3 Radar Using FlAniS

Using FlAniS Animation for GRLevel3

NOTE: Separate instructions & code for template users is on page 3 of this thread...

Some History:
FlAniS (the Flash AnimationS applet) is a project developed by SSEC (Space Science and Engineering Center) out of the University of Wisconsin-Madison by Tom Whittaker, and used heavily by the NOAA and the National Weather Service. It's a re-casting of the AniS Java applet that's now done in Flash. For the last few years the NWS has been busy changing over all of their standard Java and AniS animations over to FlAniS for satellite and radar animations. Most of their Java applets are  now deprecated, with some already being removed. This has been a fairly slow process but they are making progress. As of now they are working on finishing the change over on their local, regional satellite animations and just last week began changing over their AniS Animated Radar over to FlAniS.

Sample Web Page:

Installation instructions, can be found on my scripts page:

Well..it seems syntax errors hit me once again LOL!
I thought I had problems with the finished project but it was not as serious as
I originally thought!

Everything seems to be operating perfectly!

THANK YOU!!!!  very much for sharing this information!
This takes care of one of the last hurdles I had in getting everything
well..maybe not perfect but really close to where I want it!

Oops.. almost forgot a shameless plug :lol:  final product here   http://www.smythweather.net/GR3/localgr3.html

Hopefully someday I can return the favor!!!

Best regards,

Wayne

Thanks everyone!  :-)

Everything seems to be operating perfectly!

Wayne, glad to see you have it up and running already. Looking Good, but you might want to adjust the width and height settings so all of the controls and green image toggles are showing, unless you didn't want them to show. It looks like you have it set to about 600x668. To show the controls and eliminate the scroll bars it should be set close to 600x726. You will need to fine tune it a bit and check it in all browsers. There are 2 separate places that you need set the width and height in the applet.

I tried to run the annimator  but I get the following errors:
Warning: imagettftext() [function.imagettftext]: Could not find/open font in /home/content/p/e/o/peotone/html/gr3/flanis/testpage.php on line 149

Warning: imagettftext() [function.imagettftext]: Could not find/open font in /home/content/p/e/o/peotone/html/gr3/flanis/testpage.php on line 150

Warning: imagettftext() [function.imagettftext]: Could not find/open font in /home/content/p/e/o/peotone/html/gr3/flanis/testpage.php on line 151

Warning: imagettftext() [function.imagettftext]: Could not find/open font in /home/content/p/e/o/peotone/html/gr3/flanis/testpage.php on line 152

Any Ideas???
This is the testpage I put up http://www.peotoneweather.com/gr3/flanis/testpage
Ignoe the warning at the top of page.  That is for the weather alert box (Atomfeed).  That script is looking for my attom Array file  and not finding it in the gr3 folder!
The warnings above are toward the bottom left of the page!  My grlevel3 folder on my server is called gr3 could that be the issue?  All the files from the zip and the config file(named grlevel3.txt) and the web page are in a folder called flanis which is in the gr3 folder on the server.

Any help would be appreciated!

Definitely no expert here..but it sounds like the actual web page you are calling is not in the actual gr3 folder but in the sub folder you created to hold the animation code. Try placing the web page with the applet in the actual gr3 directory  something like  http://www.peotoneweather.com/gr3/testpage.html
and see if that gets you a display.

Hope my idea helps and not hurts LOL!

Thanks so much I will adjust the height and width to the 600x726 you recommended and see if that displays everything it should.
I also changed the width and height to the above specs for the image GR3 Uploads as well. Definitely will verify it's look in all browsers as I
have em all here on this Win machine and while I'm at it I'll check in Linux as well.

Love this applet!

Wayne

Update:
Seems to work in most browsers except IE
Only version I have installed here is IE8 and with it I just get a blank page
even in compatibility mode. Must be some sort of quirk with IE
Any code tips would be much appreciated. I have tried a few variations but not been successful in getting an image on both FF and IE

Thanks W Thomas,

I moved the folder as you said.  http://www.peotoneweather.com/gr3/testpageI still have the error messages, but now part of the player is at least showing up.
I am getting the following "additional" warning:

Could not read config file! Error=[IOErrorEvent type="ioError" bubbles=false cancelable=false eventPhase=2 text="Error #2032"]

And on top of all of that I can't get my warning bar at the top to find my "AtomArray.php" file!  It is in my root directory!
The code I use on my web pages that are in my root directory is as follows:

<tr>
<td>
<a href="http://www.peotoneweather.com/niadvisory.php "target=_blank""><img src="new_map2.png" width="100" height="100" alt="" style="border-style:solid; border-color:blue;" /></a>

</td>
<td align="top"><?php
echo "<!-- AtomFeed Alert Box -->";
include("AtomArray.php");
if($alert_box !== '') {
print '
<div>
<table border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" style="width: 942px; margin: 0px auto 0px auto;">
<tr>
<td style="color: white; background-color: blue; text-align: center">WEATHER ALERTS...for Will and Kankakee Counties. Click on alert to see details! Or on map for larger Northern Illinois Map</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>'.$alert_box.'</td>
</tr>
</table>
</div>';
}
echo "\n<!-- end AtomFeed Alert Box -->\n";
?>

</td>
</tr>

Any help would be appreciated!

I will look a bit deeper when I get back to my files. I have solved most everything except displays in IE. That is giving me fits.

Looks like you may have lost your <body> tag. Try adding it back just before your <object> tag. IE gets real touchy when there are HTML errors. Most other browsers are much more forgiving.

I have the animation script working now!  I had the config file in the fanis folder instead of the gr3 directory where it belonged.  I still show errors on the page from my AtomFeed script.  I run that script on all of my web pages (its in my template for the web site).  That script and all of my other pages are in the root directory.  I'm not sure how to run that script from the gr3 direcdtory.  So my question is how hard would it be to run the animater script from the root directory?  Or if some one can tell me how to run the AtomFeed from the gr3 directory while my other 30 pages are running it from the root?

Back to the script...Is there a way to let people choose between radar types?

Thanks

Back to the script...Is there a way to let people choose between radar types?

I looked at your page and I didn't see any errors.
Your alerts window said: "No warnings, watches, or advisories   -  Will County  -  Kankakee County"

Expanded Instructions:

The configuration file, & the web page with the applet code go into the same folder that your GRLevel3 software uploads the images to. Inside this same folder you make a new folder inside it named "flanis". Then you upload the flanis zip files into the flanis folder.

To add more radar types, just set your GRLevel3 software to upload more radar types.

Here are some sample of configuration files I use for my local radar - KDAX:
Code: [Select]
Config file for BR1:

controls=startstop, looprock, step, speed, firstlast, zoom, refresh, toggle
controls_tooltip = Start & Stop, Rock Frames Back & Forth, Step Image One at a Time, Set Frame Speed, Go to First or Last Image, Zoom In, Refresh, Click to Remove Frame From Animation
filenames = kdax_br1_9.jpg, kdax_br1_8.jpg, kdax_br1_7.jpg, kdax_br1_6.jpg, kdax_br1_5.jpg, kdax_br1_4.jpg, kdax_br1_3.jpg, kdax_br1_2.jpg, kdax_br1_1.jpg, kdax_br1_0.jpg
start_frame = 1
start_looping = true
rate = 25
backcolor = #291F4B
forecolor = #ffffff
no_enh = true
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Config file for BR248:

controls=startstop, looprock, step, speed, firstlast, zoom, refresh, toggle
controls_tooltip = Start & Stop, Rock Frames Back & Forth, Step Image One at a Time, Set Frame Speed, Go to First or Last Image, Zoom In, Refresh, Click to Remove Frame From Animation
filenames = kdax_br248_9.jpg, kdax_br248_8.jpg, kdax_br248_7.jpg, kdax_br248_6.jpg, kdax_br248_5.jpg, kdax_br248_4.jpg, kdax_br248_3.jpg, kdax_br248_2.jpg, kdax_br248_1.jpg, kdax_br248_0.jpg
start_frame = 1
start_looping = true
rate = 25
backcolor = #291F4B
forecolor = #ffffff
no_enh = true

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Config file for CR248:

controls=startstop, looprock, step, speed, firstlast, zoom, refresh, toggle
controls_tooltip = Start & Stop, Rock Frames Back & Forth, Step Image One at a Time, Set Frame Speed, Go to First or Last Image, Zoom In, Refresh, Click to Remove Frame From Animation
filenames = kdax_cr248_9.jpg, kdax_cr248_8.jpg, kdax_cr248_7.jpg, kdax_cr248_6.jpg, kdax_cr248_5.jpg, kdax_cr248_4.jpg, kdax_cr248_3.jpg, kdax_cr248_2.jpg, kdax_cr248_1.jpg, kdax_cr248_0.jpg
start_frame = 1
start_looping = true

forecolor = #ffffff
no_enh = true

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Config file for OHR:

controls=startstop, looprock, step, speed, firstlast, zoom, refresh, toggle
controls_tooltip = Start & Stop, Rock Frames Back & Forth, Step Image One at a Time, Set Frame Speed, Go to First or Last Image, Zoom In, Refresh, Click to Remove Frame From Animation
filenames = kdax_ohr_9.jpg, kdax_ohr_8.jpg, kdax_ohr_7.jpg, kdax_ohr_6.jpg, kdax_ohr_5.jpg, kdax_ohr_4.jpg, kdax_ohr_3.jpg, kdax_ohr_2.jpg, kdax_ohr_1.jpg, kdax_ohr_0.jpg
start_frame = 1
start_looping = true
rate = 25
backcolor = #291F4B
forecolor = #ffffff
no_enh = true

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Config file for SHR:

controls=startstop, looprock, step, speed, firstlast, zoom, refresh, toggle
controls_tooltip = Start & Stop, Rock Frames Back & Forth, Step Image One at a Time, Set Frame Speed, Go to First or Last Image, Zoom In, Refresh, Click to Remove Frame From Animation
filenames = kdax_str_9.jpg, kdax_str_8.jpg, kdax_str_7.jpg, kdax_str_6.jpg, kdax_str_5.jpg, kdax_str_4.jpg, kdax_str_3.jpg, kdax_str_2.jpg, kdax_str_1.jpg, kdax_str_0.jpg
start_frame = 1
start_looping = true
rate = 25
backcolor = #291F4B
forecolor = #ffffff
no_enh = true

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Config file for THR:

controls=startstop, looprock, step, speed, firstlast, zoom, refresh, toggle
controls_tooltip = Start & Stop, Rock Frames Back & Forth, Step Image One at a Time, Set Frame Speed, Go to First or Last Image, Zoom In, Refresh, Click to Remove Frame From Animation
filenames = kdax_thr_9.jpg, kdax_thr_8.jpg, kdax_thr_7.jpg, kdax_thr_6.jpg, kdax_thr_5.jpg, kdax_thr_4.jpg, kdax_thr_3.jpg, kdax_thr_2.jpg, kdax_thr_1.jpg, kdax_thr_0.jpg
start_frame = 1
start_looping = true
rate = 25
backcolor = #291F4B
forecolor = #ffffff
no_enh = true

To use the above config files for your own radar just change the "kdax" prefix in the images to your own radar's prefix. The images names are the same image names already being uploaded by your grlevel3 software program. Give each config file a unique name. Then make a new web page with the new config file name in the applet code (changed in 2 places).

OK.. Finally corrected my problem that has been haunting me most of yesterday. Simple enough when I did locate the error.
The reason IE couldn't read the config file was I had mistakenly placed a . inline with the rest of the text on the file name and
I just plain didn't catch it!  It displays perfectly in IE now as well as FF and Opera.

I would love to be able to include it on a template page ( wx.*****.php ) but since it is being pulled from a different directory than root
I'm not sure that will be possible. Ken If you see this give your valued opinion  :grin:

I greatly appreciate all the help, coaching, suggestions and everything everyone has taken time to document on this project!
Once again this just goes as proof that  The Wx Forum is THE best on the WWW hands down!
So many knowledgeable folks willing to give their time and expertise freely so others can benefit and learn!  A valuable asset!!

Hey Wayne,

Yep its up and running!  I added a second page as well for another choice of radar types!  Now if I could find out from ELDoradoWx how to have a menu by the applet so a user can scroll the radar types available.

As far as IE8 I have to click compatability mode to be able to view the opacity changes on the google map radar overlay script.  In all other browsers (mozzila, safari, chrome, and even IE7) when selecting an opacity it works fine!  Its Strange that it is only IE8!!!

I finally bit the bullet and used Frontpage to create a makeshift template that so far has been compatible with IE and FF.
Now all I lack except for maybe some cosmetics if I have to link to this as a stand alone page is including it on a template page
I have actually toyed with wxlocalgr3.php but can't seem to get it to include without errors. Seems there was some sort of trick Ken told me about several years back when I was running into the same thing getting my Wxgraphic and MAWN to play nicely together on different directories.. wish I still had my notes but that has been several hard drives ago :grin:  I confess I haven't made it to your page yet ( but I'm sure it is excellent) but are you using the USA WD Templates or something different?

Glad you got things working though!  Our trial and error hopefully paves the road for another aspiring web master to add this applet.
Other than my Blackberry it works great on everything I've tested so far..but BB's I don't think will ever support Flash,way too much platform differences I am told.

Wayne

Im almost done with the radar applet page, you can view it here: http://www.peotoneweather.com/gr3/testpage3
As far as my page, I use VWS as my software. The page itself is from scratch!  I used dreamweaver to create a unique template for the site, then Curly helped me clean it up and make the alert map to go with the alert box.

Looks great!! I have VWS here as well which is powering a OS WMR 968 but I am not publishing that data currently but plan to in the future.
I do not personally have Dreamweaver but I do have access to it so I may have to dabble with it somewhat if time allows.
I really do not have a bunch left to do to my applet page providing I can get it included as I want but if I can't make that happen I still have some cosmetic surgery to do before it's turned loose.  As elementary and primitive as it may be it's available here :oops:   http://www.smythweather.net/GR3/localgr3.html

But as most everything I have anything to do with "It's a work in progress " LOL!

At least the page is started.  Sometimes starting is the hardest thing to do!

Yikes!

Looks like a path issue but...I'm certain (sic) the files are in the right place.

The error:

Warning: require_once(Settings.php) [function.require-once]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /virtual/users/e16409-17610/web/GR3/wxgr3radar.php on line 30

...and here is my template (just a modification from my existing GRLevel3 page)

Here is the path:

Any advice is appreciated!

Hey Gordon,

If I'm understanding this correctly, you've moved wxgr3radar.php down one level in the directory and it's no longer in the same directory as settings.php and common.php. I think you need to put "../" in front of those files so they can be found in the correct directory.
