NEWBIE - Weatherlink Serial or USB
« on: April 24, 2007, 11:34:23 AM »
I will be purchasing my Davis Vantage Pro2 in the next few days.  I've installed my pole in my backyard and I'm ready to go.  I've followed several message links and in the past it seems that the serial connect was more reliable for the datalogger.  Is this still true?  Are there still data loss issues with the USB interface?  Thanks in advance.

I might be the only forum member with USB that works without problems.

But considering everyone else's experiences, I'm sure they'll tell you to got with serial...

Save yourself a lot of trouble and sleepless nights and get the serial datalogger. The USB version may or may not work for you, so why mess around with it. Go serial, install it, forget it and focus on other things that need worring about. :)

One reason that I like my serial VP2 is that it can be extended quite a ways from the computer. Mine is at or just beyond 50', while the USB cable would be limited to 16' without some trickery.

This way my console is in the living room where we can see it, while the computer is in another room.

I would go with the serial data logger. And if you don't have a serial port on your computer, you can get a third party dongle that converts the serial cable to a USB port on your computer.

I've bought and regretted a number of purchases through the years, but my VP2 isn't one of them. I'd wanted a good station since I was in high school and could only afford a min/max mercury thermometer, a 4" rain gauge, and my big item, a sling psychrometer. I only wish I'd gotten my VP sooner. It's a great station, and I'm sure you'll be happy with it.
