ABC and CNN news are showing video and reporting tsunami of up to 10 meters (that's a 33-foot wave folks!)

They just said on the news that this is the 5th most powerful earthquake in the world since 1900.

Some of the aftershocks are more powerful than what hit Haiti.

CNN is saying that Hawaii is next at 2:59AM their time. Warnings now in effect with evacuation orders. And onwards, with warnings, to all of the west coast of the U.S. up to and inc. Alaska! Good luck to all!

I'm in the SF Bay Area and tsunami warnings have been issued for much of the west coast.  Listening to my scanner, CHP was talking about possible evacuations in San Mateo County (along the coast I imagine).  Since there has been a big surge of hits to my site (currently over 600) after the quake, I added some additional links to my site for informational purposes.

I just heard on the news that New Zealand's alert level was just lowered so that's encouraging. (if you believe everything you hear on the news that is)

Hawaii is reporting little activity as this passes so maybe it's dissipating and by the time it gets to the west coast it will be small.

Saw some short clips and pix on tv/net throughout the workday.  They were pretty intense.

Just watched this
http://www.cnn.com/video/?/video/world/2011/03/11/nat.nhk.japan.sendai.tsunami.nhk&hpt=T1
18 minutes of NHK helicopter coverage as tsunami swept into Sendai.

It is incredible.

ps: Worst timing on CNN coverage, Piers talking to someone about the potential nuclear problems, and on video inset they show the big explosion at the refinery, which looked exactly like a distant nuclear mushroom cloud.

No problem.

The real time account is surreal.  Dont envy the job of the camera operator.  Literally 360 degrees of activity to cover.  Watching part of your country getting decimated.

A couple of times I wished they could have held the shot... cars can be seen speeding one way, hanging a u turn then going off in another direction to avoid the encroaching water... and you dont know if they made it.

What a terrible day.

My students had a lot of questions-too many to answer. Tried to show videos from the news and it just took too long.

What is coincidental is that I am teaching earthquakes/plate tectonics.   Every year during this unit, there is a quake. My students
are convinced that I am the cause and should quit teaching this unit.

If anyone has relatives or friends there, I hope you have heard from them and they are ok.

You can't phase me-I teach Middle School.

Same here Andrew. My fiance and i were watching the vid you posted, and many times we were like "hey!!", we'd be focused on the Tractor-trailer, yacht, small boats, cars hauling ass, etc. Then it'd goto something else. Either way, still some devastating stuff, i wish the best for them.

This is hard to believe:

Quote
(CNN) -- The powerful earthquake that unleashed a devastating tsunami Friday appears to have moved the main island of Japan by 8 feet (2.4 meters) and shifted the Earth on its axis.

"At this point, we know that one GPS station moved (8 feet), and we have seen a map from GSI (Geospatial Information Authority) in Japan showing the pattern of shift over a large area is consistent with about that much shift of the land mass," said Kenneth Hudnut, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

Reports from the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology in Italy estimated the 8.9-magnitude quake shifted the planet on its axis by nearly 4 inches (10 centimeters).

They said the same thing about the axis shift after the Chile earthquake.  Too many more and it's gonna start affecting the seasons!

The pure force video that really shows the power of the tsunami is the one looking over the town, from a hill.  You can see the water and debris pushing up, then you see it crash into some pretty big structures, the water goes straight up in the air, and you expect it to move around the obstacle, then the whole structure moves up, then just collapses.

Another obviously sad one is all the cars floating towards a newly created waterfall, the announcer says "i hope the drivers made it to safety" then you see one float by engine is up in air (most seem to float tail end) and you see that the headlights are still on.

Of course just before the kids took over the remote this morning, seeing the building at one of the nuke plant exploding is not a good thing.
