Converting AVI digital camera files
« on: September 26, 2007, 10:44:08 PM »
I recently bought a new toy ...err tool also known as a digital camera to replace my old one that was failing.  With a 1gig SD card I can take videos with audio of several minutes with it.  But the AVI file can get large real quick.  Seems use about 1MB/sec.

Does anyone know of a good preferably free program (I'm now camera poor ya know   ) to convert / compress the files down to any smaller size.  Maybe convert the .avi to flash, mpeg, etc.?

The idea being to make the files smaller and easier to share with others through the internet.  Especially those still cursed with dialup.

(Edit:  Just noticed I'd said I was using SD card.  That was the old camera.  The new one is using an XD card.   )

Try:

http://www.videohelp.com/

Also, I think Windows Media Encoder might be able to do that...

Windows Media Encoder will do it.  I use Media Encoder to convert Movie Salsa AVIs to WMVs for my website.

Thanks Tom.  I downloaded Windows media Encoder.  It reduced my 30Mb .avi to about a 20Mb .wmv file using the default settings which is what I was hoping to do.   8)

Edit..  Cool!  I tried another conversion, changed the settings to lowest DVD quality VBR video and CD quality VBR audio and the file size dropped from 30Mb to 4Mb.

Thanks, that looks like a good option as well for my occasional need.  I just converted a 36Mb .avi file to a 13Mb flash file using it.   8)
