Hmmm, they talk about "Double Doppler" around here all the time.  I figured it was just a marketing angle for the local tv forecasters to make it seem like they had twice the tools.

It can't forecast tornadoes any better then current radar.  Current radar  using the velocity data actually picks up the rotation in the atmosphere. What DP does is better identify to the met that a tornado is actually on the ground based on the debris field.

I think it will be very interesting to see them in action in their first spots like in Minnesota to where we can compare them side by side and see their advantages and disadvantages, but Im sure it will have some improvements!

So if this thing is going to scan for debris being picked up, what will stop it from catching debris from severe thunderstorms or possibly even hail? Haven't we already seen problems from current radar being a bit too sensitive and causing tons of unjustified warnings? I'm not saying it's a bad thing (other than folks will become even dumber and take even more unjustified risks with their lives by ignoring warnings more often probably), but I do wonder if this is actually a step worth taking or not.

Honestly, whether or not a tornado is on the ground is irrelevant. You should always ere on the side of caution. Don't have people waiting to see whether or not the radar indicates it to be on the ground. As has already been described in some of my previous postings, it's never a good idea to give people more rope to hang themselves with. If it looks like a good old fashioned hook echo, it's time for folks to hit the basement. It should be that simple IMO.

Another good point by HailHunter, although I think it will be a great idea to see how the new radars work, and see if any improvements can be made, and if so I'm sure they would be fixed pretty quickly. I don't think the NOAA would have new radars implemented if they didn't think they would help with warnings/saving lifes/more advanced radar imagery :-) :-)

I spoke with the COO of the Atlanta NWS, Steve Nelson, and he stated that so far the DP upgrade has been awesome. They can pick out detail much easier, including the debris balls, hail cores, etc. According to him it's been great so far. We've had it since the first week of December here.
