What goes on inside a Boltek antenna?
« on: February 26, 2012, 10:53:58 PM »
I know that the basic principle is like an aircraft automatic direction finder antenna, but there must be some smarts in the box, too. I think the last time I handled mine while it was live after a bit it got warm, so there must be some current going to active devices in there.

Is there just a preamp?  Some signal processing?

Does an RF signal come down the Cat5 cable for the PCI card to process the range and azimuth, or is some of that done in the antenna and sent as a digital stream to the card?

Just curious, wondering how this works, and how sensitive it may be to heat.  I know the new fangled pods that people are making from PVC pipe may not get as warm since they are white, but the PVC is quite thick (sched 40 is what I had to settle for, nothing lighter at the plumbers).
