Belfry Logger with DIR 505
« on: June 10, 2019, 04:29:00 PM »
I got my belfry logger in today and was really hoping to get rid of the little USB hub that I've had to keep inline using the Davis 6510USB.  Unfortunately, if I connect the belfry directly to the DIR505 it works fine for a few minutes then times out and no more data is received by meteobridge.  If I put the l little startech hub back in, then it's rock solid just like the Davis.  I know a lot of guys were happy to have been able to remove the USB hub but alas it seems I won't be able to.  Is it just the hardware this 505 has then?  Any tricks if there are any, would be most welcome!  Thanks!

I'd have to look into the exact hardware inside the 505, but with my TP-Link MR3020v1 the Belfryboy cable works great with no hub. The Davis cable is USB 1 whereas the Belfryboy one is USB2, which is why the Davis needs a hub but the Belfryboy *shouldn't* need one.

Well being less than half the cost, and the added bonus of maybe not needing a hub were the reasons I went ahead and bought one instead of another Davis brand.  Not a big deal, at least being passive the hub isn't yet another thing that has to be plugged into AC.  Thanks for the reply!

Ok, this is interesting, the Meteobridge Hardware page says the D-Link DIR-505 only has a USB2.0 port, and therefore is incompatible with USB1.1 devices the like Davis logger, unless you connect a USB hub.

However:

D-Link's manual and the openwrt page for it both say that the DIR505 supports USB 1.1 and therefore, since it has USB1.1 support, the Davis logger itself should work without a hub. Not really sure what's going on there then.

Maybe someone that actually has the DIR505 will respond and shed some light on this conflicting information.
