HW 1.5.4 gust history
« on: October 20, 2011, 12:16:45 PM »
Getting to know this new LaCrosse 2813 and have a question for the HW veterens...

Yesterday we had a bit of wind for the first time since starting this thing up.  The console showed "HI" wind for the day as 12.5mph and the data from my Davis station seemed to agree with that gust.  But today I am playing with templates and graphs in HW, and it shows the highest gust yesterday as only 4.0mph.

Any tips as to what I may have configured wrong?

I believe it's what your recording interval in the HW program that the templates read from is set to. The templates use data saved there. An example, I see on my console right now a Max Gust of 20.6 mph on Oct. 9th at 03:33AM. When I plot a graph for wind gusts for Oct., I see a peak gust of 12.3mph on Oct. 9th at 03:30AM because the saved data is set to record every 30 minutes. The 03:33AM gust was never recorded and I would need to have the recording interval set to every minute to have caught that gust on record. Make sense?
Cheers!

It almost makes sense.  The interval is currently the default 2 hrs (which will be changed).  The data file shows wind-speed and gust for what I assumes was wind-speed at the moment of the interval (usually 0.00) and I thought whatever the max (gust) was stored during the last interval and then dumped for the next interval's max.  But I have guessed wrong, because the timeframe I mention in OP had the gust on the console of 12+ and in the data file 4.0  so I just need to get my brain around it some more.

Yeah, I have my interval set for every 30 mins. and whatever happens with the wind between those time periods doesn't get saved. Just on the console the peak gust is shown until a higher one comes along overwrites it or you manually reset it. With the interval set, for example the default 2hrs., you could have a 10mph gust at 12:15 and if it stored until the next interval you would see the 10mph gust at 2PM even if the wind was calm at 2PM.

I guess I still don't get what it is storing as the gust.  Regardless of the reported timestamp of the gust, I figure it should just fill that "high wind" register with whatever was highest since the last data dump, and clear it after the dump for the next interval.  It records two number, "winds" and "gust" so I wonder where the gust for the interval comes from if not a "high value" register.

"3";"10.09.2011 06:00 PM";"0.0";"0.0"

I don't have elevated expectations for this setup, I just want to know how it works so I can know what to expect and explain it to my FIL.

Yeah, Dan, you'll really have to educate me on the finer points of HW.  It's raining, and I just noticed something interesting.  It hasn't rained for a few days and my "total" has been 1.16" (station has only been running for 10 days).  The console AND the data (below) show a tip and a higher total by one tip, but the graphic for last hour and 24hr shows no tip. The graphic for "total" has incremented to 1.17".  Just wondering (added to my wondering list) why the graphic (last hour and 24hr) wouldn't reflect the data.

Interesting and I'm wondering if it's part of LaCrosse's "fix" for the previous rain (x2 error) readings. That is, the console waits until the second .01 tip before it displays? I'm taking a stab in the dark here. Did you ever get more than the 1 (.01) tip and if so did it show up in the hr/24hr sections?

Perhaps an e-mail to the tech support folks asking about this? I'd like to hear their response as well (if you get lucky and get a reply).

Well, as the data above show, I started the day with 1.16 total, 1.16 for the week and 0.00 for 24hr.  I now have (9.5hours later) total 1.31, week 1.16 and 24hr 0.14 on the HW graphics page, and below is my data for the remainder of today's measurements.  So the graphics for "total" have caught up with the data (and console says 0.14 as well), but the "week" hasn't added a drop of today's rain.

[edit] I just noticed that line 160 incremented by 0.02 with only one tip.  I doubt that this was "catching up" from 8.5 hours earlier [/edit]

(For reference, my Davis Vue registered 0.16" for the day so far, just two tips difference.  The vue is about 30' off the ground above the peak of my roof.  The LaCrosse round gauge is fastened to my deck railing, about 6' off the ground and about 40' from the vue.)
