Just like the government. All they want are puppets. I hope he keeps speaking his mind. Screw the politicians!  :x

Here is Jeff Masters Blog from Wunderground on the subject.

Good for Proenza. Atleast somebody has the jewels to stand up and say something about an outdated satellite. I say build it and launch it.

Regarding the flap over NHC Director Bill Proenza's announcement that QuikSCAT could fail at any moment, NOAA has published this "Feel Good" press release: http://www.noaanews.noaa.gov/stories2007/s2879.htm.

A quote from the release...
"Additionally, NESDIS processes data from other spacecraft, such as NASA’s research QuikSCAT satellite, which is used in hurricane forecast models. “Our forecasters are using research tools like QuickSCAT to develop enhanced forecast models,” said Mary Glackin, acting director of the NOAA National Weather Service."

As a coastal resident, I feel much better knowing that if or when QuikSCAT fails, directors will still be using data from the satellite to keep me informed.

This was  the headline at CNN.

National Hurricane Center director Bill Proenza has left his position after staff signed a petition calling for his ouster, CNN confirms.

No link yet but I'm sure there will be soon.
Just an opinion, but I think it sucks that the employees actually have the power to replace someone just because they don't like him. Lets face it, if he never opened his mouth about QuickScat he would still be the director today. The politics infiltrating the TPC is sickening.
Supposedly Ed Rappaport was named the new director.

I have to wonder about the motivation of the employees that wanted him to go.  Couple thoughts...

1) Were they either threatened or offered something by the upper management under the table to do what they did?

2) Or maybe he's a my way or the highway type who knows everything and is as much of a bare to deal with day to day by the lower employees as he is by the upper management?  (In other words maybe the employees below him decided the cure was not worth the medicine?  Maybe the future of their government jobs did not look so cushy with him at the helm?)

Maybe some of those 'whining clowns' need to work in the real world where you have to PRODUCE to keep your job...I have a feeling that some of them are used to having their own way....

It's funny listening to all of these replies.. If 1% of you had any knowledge of what was happening there, you'd change your tune....
Realistically, no one has a clue what was going on....... Too much spin on everything from everyone..  I just hope that the NHC can get back to the respectable position when Neil Frank was there! The last thing we need is another Katrina hit the coast right in the middle of a smackdown happening in the NHC!

The director may be gone but the forecasters are still there. The only forecaster that is not there this year is Stacy Stewart who is on combat duty in Iraq.
