Gust Front or OFB?

They're the one and the same (aren't they?).

I would say a gust front is usually an outflow boundary, but an outflow boundary may not be a gust front.
It's not unusual for storms as far away as Chicago to create an outflow boundary which sets up here in the Ohio Valley and then triggers storms the next day.
At least that's my understanding from the example they gave at our Advanced Spotter Training a few months ago.

Very nice.

I had been on vacation (and went through the Midwest) and didn't get a single spot of severe weather...until I got to Portales, New Mexico on my way back to Albuquerque. WTF?  ](*,) #-o

I went from El Paso, TX to Pratt, KS and got nothing but hot air and humidity. Well..it was fun drive on the KS Turnpike. :D

Got to Kansas City and stayed for 4 days and after I left for Thayer, MO, it poured cats and dogs in KC. (Anybody ever been there and ate at Hayward's BBQ?)

When I left Thayer (one day stay) it rained in Thayer and when I got to Springdale, AR, it threatened to rain there. (But it didn't. The next morning was HOT). Went through Norman, OK (very nice morning when I toured OU, very hot afternoon when I left). That same night I got to Portales and it POURED (but only for like, five minutes- impressive lightning show driving in though from Amarillo). I'll add that just two days ago I was in Portales and now the town is getting severe weather. It's like I'm severe weather repellant (hey anybody want me in the Midwest?)  ;)

Yes we will take you.  If you could come stay at our farm through say November that would be great.  We don't need any more rain.

These are shots from the last few days in my area.

6/25/10

I drew an arrow on the saved picture for my Rio Rancho, NM weather facebook page.
The storms were moving east earlier, and then I noticed a NE and then N trend. Those storms
east of the arrow fizzled out. We did get about .12" of rain. If El Nino still existed full blown, that
amount might've been higher, and the radar images would probably be totally different.

Ok, I think I might bite the bullet and buy this.

1. What's everyone using, Level2 or 3?

2. Do you upload these images to your website?

3. Are/can they be animated?

4. What if anything special do I need/need to know to make this work properly?

Thanks in advance guys!

You can also use JavaScript, but I like CNYWeather's method better on a page dedicated to only showing the radar.

To show an animated thumbnail view on my home page I use this (it's showing the latest image twice for clarity)
Code: [Select]
<script language="JavaScript">
<!--

if (document.images) { // Preloaded images
demo1 = new Image();
demo1.src = "kiln_br1_0.jpg";

demo2 = new Image();
demo2.src = "kiln_br1_9.jpg";

demo3 = new Image();
demo3.src = "kiln_br1_8.jpg";

demo4 = new Image();
demo4.src = "kiln_br1_7.jpg";

demo5 = new Image();
demo5.src = "kiln_br1_6.jpg";

demo6 = new Image();
demo6.src = "kiln_br1_5.jpg";

demo7 = new Image();
demo7.src = "kiln_br1_4.jpg";

demo8 = new Image();
demo8.src = "kiln_br1_3.jpg";

demo9 = new Image();
demo9.src = "kiln_br1_2.jpg";

demo10 = new Image();
demo10.src = "kiln_br1_1.jpg";

demo11 = new Image();
demo11.src = "kiln_br1_0.jpg"

}

function timeimgs(numb) { // Reusable timer
thetimer = setTimeout("imgturn('" +numb+ "')", 900);
}

function imgturn(numb) { // Reusable image turner
if (document.images) {

if (numb == "11") { // This will loop the image
document["demo"].src = eval("demo11.src");
timeimgs('1');
}

else { document["demo"].src = eval("demo" + numb + ".src");

timeimgs(numb = ++numb);
}
}
}

// -->
</script> <a href="/radarloop.php"><img name="demo" src="kiln_br1_0.jpg" title="Click for Full Size Radar Loop" alt="Local Doppler Radar Display" width="300" height="180" border=0></a><script type="text/javascript">timeimgs('1');</script>

I use Level 3 also.

Sorry for the questions, I had it installed on my laptop but let it expire before I got around to actually trying it.

Can all of the different displays be animated?
It seems like I've seen different backgrounds, some just black, some topo, etc, does all that comes with it or are there add-ons that might be extra?
How hardware intensive is it?

Thanks!

If by different displays be animated, you mean the different radar types, Yep.
Great script on here for it. Took a little fiddling but got it going great.

Backgrounds, you choose. http://grlevelxstuff.com/
They are all free, plus tons of other goodies.

Only add on I got now was the MichiganWXsystem placefiles for watches/warnings

http://www.michiganwxsystem.com/places.php  $55.00 a year but I think worth it.

Ok, I see all of those different place files, can you explain those a little? I'm assuming they're almost like layers that overlay the radar?

Yes I think thats a good way to explain it.

I dont have any clue how they work but would assume they draw polygons
by using NWS data. I know they have lat/long in the files so I figure thats how the
placefiles know where to draw the polygons.

I'm using the watch/warnings placefile. It will show all watches and or warnings.
GRLevel3 does have a built-in option to show warnings also. Severe weather like
tornado, thunderstorm or flood warnings. It wont show watches or any type of winter
advisories unless you use a pay-to-play placefile.

I can see that can add up too! I'd love to spend the $300/yr and get it all, that would be pretty neat, but I'm not there yet. I need as many people hitting my site as you have first! I did manage to get in the top 25 on USAWeatherfinder the other day, but dropped back down yesterday, we had a slow weather day!

I'm assuming that this installs in it's own directory, no need to worry about any integration with anything else?

I'm lucky with all the hits Steve. Trust me. Once you get "found" that helps a lot.
Winter here is nuts. I get 2x as many hits than in the summertime. It started slow.
You send info to your local TV stations? I email 3x a day with the weather report.

The webcam helps too. WeatherBonk, Weather underground all supply hits. I get a lot
of "So are you Tony from Westmoreland who's camera I see on TV?"  Even from my relatives lol

I also put Google Ads on there too. I figured what the heck. I've got $7.00 in the bank since
September. That helps out.

I'm scrimping on my site. Last thing I bought was the placefiles. That was
before the wife lost her job. So no more buying anything for now.

GRLevel 3 installed like a charm in it's own directory. The only thing I dont like
is that after a restart, the program doesnt remember your zoom level and you have
to manually start the FTP again. I've made it so Windows Update goes while I'm home
so I can remember to start that up again. I've also got it on another computer instead of
my WD one, 'cause there are 3 users on this and nobody remembers to "sign back in on dad's name"
therefore the radar wont FTP because I'm not on my screen name. I'm sure there's a workaround
for that but I havent found it yet.

I was wondering about the FTP part, I might just use Fling to do the uploads, it's uploading everything else!

I think I'll go ahead and download it on the weather computer and start playing with it. I'm off for the next two weeks, and it's raining today, so I might as well be doing something non-productive!

Thanks for your help Tony (and Andrew!).

I've got the web site building down...  :-) I'm always adding something new so I figured this would be the next thing! I just like all the bells and whistles. I've got it working and uploading right now, I just need to get animation working on my website now.

Cant use Fling really. GR3 has some funky internal stuff that prevents that.  Also the GR3 does a bunch of renaming of your last series of images on your site, which works perfectly with Ken's scripts, and other animator scripts.

 I think site hits are more where you are located. Kinda like real estate where your located determines how many hits on gets. Being in the cool north  where no one is interested till cruise ship times one to 2 hits an week are the norm  comes about April I start to pick up.  That radar stuff is nice  but for here on my site it would be completely useless. In fact  even the NWS forecast office doesn't get  an view of radar over  their position and they are closer.

Got a test page working using FLanis, testing different things. http://www.daculaweather.com/radar/ffc_f/grl3_v2.php I need to find out more about backgrounds.
You're right John, I think in those areas where you're saturated with choices about where to get your weather from, the harder it is to get exposure for your site. If you're more isolated and have good info, more people will come to your site because it might be the only credible source for weather info around. Quite a few of the top sites on USAWeatherfinder are locations that are more remote.
