Noises with Nexstorm
« on: August 03, 2007, 04:18:01 PM »
Ever since the computer meltdown and replacement, it has been one thing after the other. I've got everything fixed except Nexstorm. I got a different driver from Boltek that allows it to run as it should. Only problem is I am now getting constant noise. It cycles up to about 2200 and just stays there going up and down between about 2100 and 2200 noises. Only thing that has changed is the computer. I've adjusted squelch, sensitivity, and everything else I can think of with no luck. I'm starting to think it's the driver itself because it's actually an XP driver with different settings, not a Vista driver. Any thoughts?

Did you try putting a coffee can over the antenna to impede any outside noises? If you are still reading high noises with the can over it then you may have a connection problem. I've read about people having issues with the connection to the antenna. Make sure it is snug and you are getting full contact on the PC and the antenna. I'm not sure about any of the software issues you were talking about but what I suggested may be somewhere to start.

On my old Boltek ISA card system, I had trouble with the CPU fan. I verified it by opening the case and briefly stopping the fan with a pencil eraser pressed on the hub.

Replacing the fan fixed the problem. Any fan in the case could cause a similar problem, and the troubleshooting and resolution would be the same.

Unplug the antenna from the Stormtracker card to see if the noise goes away. If it doesn't, move the Stormtracker card to a different PCI slot and try again.

Unplugged it and the noises stop. Moved it to a different slot, still have the noises. Covered the antenna, still noise. Stopped both fans in the computer, no change. I have one thing to say......

Try changing the cable, even if you have to bring the antenna closer.

Then you isolated the problem to:

1: The antenna
2: The cable
3: Both 1 & 2

As suggested, try changing the cable first.

Changed the cable, moved the antenna all over the place, turned squelch up and down, adjusted the noise sensitivity, all to no effect. I have an email in to Boltek to see what they say and whether or not they'll send me a new one under the 1 year warranty.

I did notice that the antenna was very warm when I took it down. Not to hot to handle but definitely not room temp. Is that normal? Can one of you check yours and see if they are very warm as well? Thanks.

I know mine is warm. I have it installed in a 130 degree attic.   Do you have another PC you can try it on? Maybe something is going haywire with the computer that you don't know about.

Yes, it will be warm. That is normal.

Since it wasn't the cable, then it is more then likely the antenna gone bad.
See what Boltek has to say about it. They are usually good about replacing a bad antenna under warranty.

Keep us posted.
