Good deal. Staples Canada must have shipped all their old ones down for the sale. They only have the new LCD ones either Intelligent or AVR. Cheapest model is $99.99 for a 600

I will have to check the paper... the cheapest one on staples.ca is the 600 for $99.99 would give up 15VA's to save $65 bucks. I am sure one of mine is nearing end of life...

Y'know, it's pretty easy to replace the battery in most UPSes. In the US, I get batteries from www.gruberpower.com, or you can get them from BatteriesPlus stores. I just rebuilt a half dozen or so at work.

I never thought of replacing for a cheap UPS, I would definitely get a replacement for my 2 expensive tripp lites...

I will check it out, but like everything I will probably get hooped on shipping to Canada, or by the local prices if I find it here.

I googled ups batteries Canada and found lots of hits for Canadian UPS battery suppliers.

Has anyone picked one of these up? I bought two of them and can't get the included software to communicate with either. Tried each on two different machines (both XP), tried different cables and have come to realize that I'm overlooking something obvious but...

Anyone have a spare brain cell or two to lend me?

No experience with that "intelligent" LCD model. I have used a serial Cyberpower UPS historically and it worked ok (uh oh, not another serial vs usb debate). I vaguely recall using the windows UPS management rather than the supplied powerpanel software.... The powerpanel software worked in principal, but I think the documentation recommended using the XP mgnt instead...

I looked at these yesterday. Looks like a very nice unit. Claims upto 55 mins of backup time. I find that hard to believe from such a small unit. But did not pick up one. Needed a mouse and keyboard to get another computer up and running. So that used up my spare cash. So maybe they will have a deal next month?

Where is the 55 minute claim made?

Its seems they have several stats, but have not seen one that high.
Spec sheet on cyberpower site 2mins full, 9 mins half.

My Staples had two versions of the same unit - one claiming 55 min, the other 42 mins. The only difference I could find anywhere was in a mfg sticker code. One digit was a 7 and on the other an 8. I'm taking that as year of manufacture. They only had one of the "55" variety so the other I bought is a 42, which I haven't setup yet. I'll be using that one for cable modem, VOIP device and phone (1 line is Vonage).

As far as the 55 unit - I set that up last nite with the desktop Wx computer, router and monitor. Pulled the plug and it was seamless, which was the point for me - too many quick power outages out here. The last one scrambled my router firmware, which was fun. Batt drain I only took down to 40% as the 'test' was for transition.

I sure would like to use the software tho' as I like the graphics of it all but it still can't comm with the unit.

The claim is made right of the front of the box in great big gold letters. But, like I said. I would have to see it to believe it. But remember. That time is probably based on half load or less. And max wattage is only something like 325 watts.

Watch that max wattage. I have an APC that claims 400 watts and the darn thing simply will not handle any reasonable load. It _might_ handle my netbook.

Battery is fine. I checked it and charged (cycled) it on my professional charger. I think the ratings are way overstated, that's all.

All UPS's give 2 ratings, VA, and Watts. There is usually a great difference between the two. According to Wikipedia:

Wheather or not I leave my CRT on during a power interuption depends on the situation. If it a trans failure or something like that, I turn it off. IF it's storm related, I leave it on. Because I'm normally watching the radar and other stuff.

Funny the box is different than the website. So that's about 4 differing numbers they post/publish. I guess results may vary....

It IS a curious situation at best.

I spent 15 minutes with the Staples mgr over those box differences. "I want my other 13 minutes!". They had 5 in inventory but he found only 3 on the shelf - 1 @ 55, 2 @ 42. As I mentioned earlier, the only difference was in the manufacturer bar code sticker in the first few characters. The 42s had a '7', the 55 had an '8' which to me meant that the 55 was a fresher production run as I interpreted it as '2007' vs '2008'.

I kept wrestling with the logic of why buy a battery-based unit with a lower run time and a possibly older mfg date? Perhaps they improved their batt, technology, whatever.

Then it all became crystal clear - it's a $35 product... why am I this concerned - and I bought two as intended. I still want my other 13 minutes tho'...

I found it interesting that on the '55' there's no mention of 15" monitor and the 17" monitor is 2x the '42' unit. I guess it's like any other rating that used as a sales pitch - skew the results to attain better numbers.

I don't know about a 45* grade in neutral - that might be pushing the envelope of sensible techniques in data reporting
