Great job Gregg! It must have been quite a challenge getting the assembled mast upright, held in place, and bolted to the mailbox post.

Thanks!  It wasn't too bad.  The last time I hoisted it up (the previous location) my dad was there to help.  Luckily, this time the wind wasn't blowing.  I did feel like a pole vaulter, though.   8-)

That's a really old mast.    But if it still works, might as well use it.   ;)

The price was right!   \:D/

Since everyone (well, it seems like everyone) is talking about grounding and stuff, I went to Lowes today and bought a grounding rod, clamps, and #4 wire (I guess you call it wire, it's more like a copper bar).

Because of the way I have the clamps holding the mast to the post now, I couldn't get the grounding clamp on the mast.   #-o

I put the wire between the clamp that was there and the mast and hooked it up to the grounding rod.  The next time I have the mast down, I'll try to remember to put a little more distance between the mast and the post so I can the the grounding clamp on there and do it right.  Hopefully it will work as is.

By the way, the #4 wire was $1/ft and the 8-ft. grounding rod (copper) was $11.47.

Wow, you don't have to worry now about the mast blowing over with that wire holding it up. How was it driving the 8' rod in the ground, any obstacles? The end isn't mushroomed so it looks like it went pretty easy.

Well, I'll be perfectly honest.  I took a hacksaw and cut it in half, so it was only 4'.   8-)   That's still a long rod.  But I have a sledge hammer and I just took it slow.  I was surprised that it wasn't harder than it was.     The end was pointed, so I guess that helped.   \:D/

I drove a 6 footer next to the house and had to pull it back out and try again several times before I found a path clear of stones. I think by the time I did get it all the way down it was probably only 4 feet also by the look of the mushroom head end!
