Backup Sensor Storage Advice
« on: January 06, 2012, 05:54:26 PM »
I had purchased a backup temperature sensor (with the transmitter) and a backup transmitter for my anemometer a couple of years ago.  I stored them away to use in case of sensor failures.  I had noticed that my anemometer was periodically losing contact with the base station.  My first idea was to replace the backup batteries with new lithium batteries.  That did not seem to help as it was still periodically losing contact.

I decided to replace the sensor with the backup I had purchased.  When I opened it up I noticed that the alkaline batteries that were shipped with the unit had corroded!  I was able to use a wire brush to scrape out the corrosion and replace the batteries.  It is working, at least for now.

My advice:  If you purchase backup sensors to keep on hand, remove the batteries before you store it.
