Under users in the past 30 minutes on the home page of the forum I saw a MSN,Google and a Yahoo name? You can't click on it. Just wondering what this was.

Wow! That's a flashback! Hard to believe it's been ~7.5 years already. I see I had the 13th post on the "new" forum. It's interesting how many original members from that thread aren't here anymore.

I did find that our oldest post (from July 20, 2006, 11:08:36 PM, made by Chris (capeweather) when he established the forum software) was still visible and everything in-between.

Best regards,
Ken

Thanks Randall,
There were 4 of us who established wxforum.net after the sudden demise of Gary Oldham's weatherforum.net (due to domain hoster demise and snatch of the name by the DNS peddlers) left weather enthusiasts without a home to continue the discussions about our hobby.  We followed Gary's original rules for forum demeanor and the result has been (with very few exceptions) a cordial and helpful place to share knowledge and experiences about our weather hobby (including hardware, software and website stuff).
It's the members who make it fun and useful.  We admins have a easy job as there is little cat-herding to be done and we can participate with our own hobby development experiences too.

Under users in the past 30 minutes on the home page of the forum I saw a MSN,Google and a Yahoo name? You can't click on it. Just wondering what this was.

I've enabled the tracking of Spiders who now show when they are crawling the website to index pages for their search engines -- expect them to pop on/off as they do their reading of the pages.  We get a lot of guest visitors through searches on the major search companies (Google, Yahoo!, MSN/Bing, etc.)  You can't click on their names since they do not have corresponding userids to show their forum profiles -- it's just information about who/what is accessing the forum in the last 30 minutes.

Wow! That's a flashback! Hard to believe it's been ~7.5 years already. I see I had the 13th post on the "new" forum. It's interesting how many original members from that thread aren't here anymore.

Yes, it is surprising that we've been doing this for 7.5 years, and growing all the time.  It looks like about 500 members have visited the forum in the last 35 days -- not bad for a member list of almost 7,500.

Of the original 4 admins, only two are still active Chris (Capeweather) and me (saratogaWX).  I'm glad that Chris (SLOweather) joined us so there are still three primary admins to share the duties.  I'm also very thankful that very little 'moderation' duties are required as the forum members treat each other with respect and not name-calling (generally) -- that makes it a pleasant and useful visit for our newer members with questions/problems needing assistance, and that assistance is what is provided.

Best regards,
Ken

Is it possible to have black text, instead of colored text on a lighter colored background, for the "subject" line?

The colored text is styling applied to a hotlink (URL) that if clicked, takes you to that item.
The black text (Today, Yesterday, etc) is just bold text.

I'll tweak around the CSS to see if the contrast can be improved for link styling (visited/unvisited) which by tradition use blue text for links (sometimes with underlines) and red/blue mix for visited links.

I noticed that mouse-over a topic doesn't pop-up a preview any longer.  Is that an add-on?
Hi Rick,
Yes, that was a mod -- unfortunately it was not available for SMF2 version (only for SMF1.x).
I'll keep looking for something like that.. it was popular :)

Best regards,
Ken

This would be great if you can find it, people have a bad habit of just naming new topics "Help", Trouble", Issues", etc.  #-o

So, I've increased the 'blueness' of the links in the CSS (from #346 to #34B ) and that seems to have improved the visibility .. what do you think?

Previously, there was a way to say "do not show me this board".  The selections that I had made to customize what I see, seem to have vanished from my profile.

OK, stuff happens, but how do I re-do that customization?  I think I looked through everything in Profile (but I probably missed it), and I tried going through "Help" with no success.

Thanks.
The Ignore Boards feature is built-in (somewhere) inside of SMF2, and unfortunately the 'Hide Ignored Boards' MOD wouldn't install (version issue).  I'll work on getting this feature back...

Any joy on this yet?  Thanks.

I see that, and I see that my previous settings were preserved.  But how do I get it to work?  I tried the usual things like removing settings and putting them back in, logging out and back in, etc.

It's helpful to note the text regarding what the default SMF2 Ignore Boards feature does:

Quote
When a board is ignored, the new post indicator will not show up on the board index.

New posts will not show up using the "unread post" search link (when searching it will not look in those boards) however, ignored boards will still appear on the board index and upon entering will show which topics have new posts.

When using the "unread replies" link, new posts in an ignored board will still be shown.

As I stated earlier, the 'Hide Ignored Boards' feature was a mod which has not been updated to work with SMF2 (only SMF1.x) and I have it on the list of things to try and refit to work with SMF2.

Ken

Ok, I think the 'hide ignored boards' mod is now working on the forum.  It should remove any ignored boards from the main index.

Yes.  Thanks very much.  I do know that it takes a while to get the kinks out of stuff.

I'm a bit amazed at how long I've been hanging around here.

For me, this only works in "Show unread posts since last visit" or "Show new replies to your posts", it doesn't work while viewing posts normally.

I think that is how it is supposed to work. You see the text only when you are looking at the unread posts. It would be nice to be able to preview posts when looking at specific topic forums whether they are unread or not. That would let us  scan through posts to find something specific without having to use the search function.

...but it doesn't seem to happen when looking at unread posts if you preview them normally. Not the way I remember it working, as I never used "Show unread posts..." in the past, but remember seeing previews when hovering over topic titles. Or am I going nuts?
