That was definitely a "big one"
I was looking at the USGS site on deaths from quakes a week or so ago. they have a US list and a world historical list.
Its amazing how many deaths in US were actually tsunami related. I tend to think of the ones I remember 89 and 94 in Cali....and big historical ones like 06 San Fran, but as you go back over the years many of the big death events were tsunami related. Feel sorry for Hawaii, they seem to get smacked every once in a while from quakes thousands of miles away (chile2, alaska...)

Most of earthquakes deaths here in Alaska was from tsumani related. At Kodiak the elders knew what was happening when the harbor empty out but the young people started out to go clamming. and wouldn't listen to old timers. Naval air station there had 4 feet of water in the Hangars after it came in. In other quakes Scotch Cap Ligth house was wiped out. Remains from the crew was found 100 feet up the hill side where the water carried them. It apperaed the crew was trying to reach the whistle house up there and was over taken.
