Here's a decent source online to check the main temperature spread, set against surface pressure; and which also has an element covering "wind vectors".

http://ww2010.atmos.uiuc.edu/(Gh)/wx/surface.rxml

"temp. spread" and the difference between warmer and cooler air mass, being the main focus.

"surface pressure", shown in isobars, the basic layout of which works to show both the direction that wind flow will moveparallel to and between whatever main two, and also how fastthe narrower the more quick.

"wind vectors", fairly obvious.

Alternative sources for both temperature spread, and surface pressure.

Then add the amount of water in the soil now.

Bad for standing trees.
Not good for crops.

I am with you, hoping for the best.

I was in the one in July 2011. I was just outside Vinton, IA. I received a 112 mph wind. Good times! Okay not really.

we are hearing the weather will be up along the Minnesota border and down into Blackhawk county.  I am on the edge maybe 40 miles to the North,   It generally depends on how much heating of the atmosphere before the temperature drops.

Interesting.  I'm right on the boundary there for the most frequent.  I've really never heard them called 'derechoes' here though...

Yeah, because to me "derecha" is simply spanish for "right" ("izquierda" is left) and not some weather-related phenomenon.

Isn't it just another term for squall line?

That's an old nautical term that I'm familiar with, via USN, but "derecho" is apparently something recent.

Yeah, to me "derecho" is simply spanish for "right" ("izquierda" is left) and not some weather-related phenomenon.

"Derived by the Spanish word for "straight ahead," derechos are a weather phenomenon that traditionally happens only a few times a year. It is defined as a line of storms that produces a swath of damage more than 240 miles long with gusts of at least 58 mph."

First wave passed me here in Ohio but not by much.  Lots of lightning and some thunder along with gusty winds.  Second wave is coming through Indiana and Michigan.  Should be here around 1 or2 am depending on the wind direction.  Really hope it scoots out over Lake Erie!

it went around us, not complaining, but this is the edge as we started home.  the temperature before we went into the eatery was 90, 30 min later 68, this was fast moving and by the time we got one mile south of that, it had already overtook us, but lucky us, no storm... :)

Long night but thankfully not as eventful as forecasted.  Was almost right on the money with my prediction of time for wave two...was woken from sleep at 1:50am when round two was approaching.  Smacked (that's an appropriate term for it for sure!) into us at 2am sharp.  Long Road Station in Avon recorded a 27mph wind gust at that time.  Fortunately the storm was traveling at about 50mph so the initial rough wave passed by 2:20am and then it was just moderate rain.

Hope others made it through ok!!!
