What's the highest wind speed you have recorded on your Vantage Pro2. Mine is 38 MPH...
Looks like rain...

40 mph on 1/30/2008.

Missed some fast straight line winds just a week ago by mere yards.

A house two down from us has a tree about 18" in diameter get blown down and many more trees within a mile or two.

It can get windy here in southern Idaho. These are the monthly peak wind gusts just this year:
7/1/08  37 mph
6/30/08 46 mph
5/20/08 48 mph
4/14/08 46 mph
3/28/08 41 mph
2/2/08  35 mph
1/4/08  51 mph
It's pretty common to have winds above 35 mph at least once a month.

Some of the high peaks were
1/14/08  51 mph
8/31/07  50 mph
5/21/07  78 mph
8/15/06  57 mph
3/7/06   79 mph
7/24/05  52 mph
I'm not 100% sure I trust the >70mph readings. They might be anomalies, although it was very, very windy when those were recorded. Here's the official Boise, ID NWS wind observations for comparison. The Boise airport is about 20 miles from me.

60 MPH-April 2008

The NWS said it may have been possible but it could be a effect of how it is mounted on the building.
I know that at that time, I was not sure if I would have any shingles left on the roof.

I had a 51mph gust on 10/11/2007.  A little while ago I put together a simple weather station records page.  Here is the link: http://www.skunkbayweather.com/Totals.htm

Earlier this year I recorded a gust of 40 MPH during an approaching cold front.

VP1:

50 mph January 30, 2008 due to a passing cold front (no storms).

The temp dropped 30oF in about 3 hours right around midnight, which is not good for January. The day's high was 63o, which is 34o above normal for that date.

I'm like 'tinplate' here - common for 35+ MPH winds. My highest (since Apr o7) was 46 this past May 21st but that's life in the desert.

EDIT: Tonite was a 33MPH wind but the 13.71"/hr rain rate was interesting as well.

41 mph here on 1/15/06. The closest I have come since was 36 mph on 2/24/06. Peak was lower in 2007 (35 mph) and again so far in 2008 (33 mph on 3 occasions). The lower peak gusts are almost certainly just due to the types of weather systems affecting my area, although monthly/yearly averages have gone down as well. I'm hoping the lower average wind speed is just a product of weather patterns changing, but I was wondering- could there be any anemometer drift on the VP2? That, or maybe the trees have just grown that much to lower wind speeds.

I'll be moving to a new house (and getting a new VP2 for it) only a couple hundred yards away with slightly better exposure in November, and the station on this house will be used by the future owner. It'll be interesting to compare peak gusts after I move.

Great site!  Thanks to the owner and all who post so much info. =D>
Ideas from here will give me something to do over the winter months acomin'

Here in Northern Michigan my Davis VP2 has said these are my top 5 speeds and dates:
50   3/1/2007    ENE
50   11/27/2007   W
41   4/4/2007    W
41   7/10/2007   WSW
40   1/30/2008   W

I do need to get my wind instrument a bit higher to clear some trees but that involves taking my TV tower down too.

Ironton,
I'm only 5 miles from you and would gladly take the time to climb the tower and move your wind sensor higher for you.

Thanks for that offer.  It is not that my tower is so tall.  I have climbed it several times.  I need to lay it down to either work on /take down /or replace my TV antenna and rotor.  (Not sure what I will do with the new DTV signal coming.)

Sometime we need to get together.  I retired a while back so am now home most days (unless I help my son on his house project).
Maybe next week?

Hi all,

new to the site.  my fastest was 62mph taken 4/10/08 (see below for pic) - big storm that hit north Texas.  was a crazy wind storm that did an amazing amount of roof/chimney/fence damage to the area.

i have a vp2 (for about 1 year) and i just bought a linksys nslu2 and have meteohub publishing data to weatherunderground as of yesterday - pretty cool setup for publishing data if you haven't seen this.

Well I set a new record today of 70 mph this afternoon.

Power has been out since a little before that, about 6-7 hrs now.  Running on battery backup to DSL and using laptop to post.  No storms, sun out, just wind from Ike and a cold front.  Trees down, roofs damaged etc around me but only had a couple 1-2" branches off the maples in my yard.  We got lucky!   ;-)

Ike paid us a visit today too   #-o

Lots of trees down, power outages, etc.  Not hardly any rain though.  We were just on the southeast edge as it passed through MO and IL.

I'll throw in my records.  I just moved from in town to out of town.  Where I'm at there are literally no trees.  I'm out in the wide open prairies of North Dakota.  In the first two weeks of being in the new house, I shattered my old record of 44 mph on three different occasions.

July 19th, 58mph
July 28th, 55mph
July 31st, 69mph

No wonder they say ND has some of the highest wind potential for energy generation than any state in the US.

BTW, I also like to keep track of wind run.  Typical normal in town wind run used to run me in the 2000 mile range.  First full month in the new house, 4461 miles.  So yeah, it's windy here...

And you'll probably see bigger! It's windy here in southern Idaho, but I'm pretty confident North Dakota has us beat easily. The graph below shows the wind runs here over the past several months. I wouldn't be surprised if you top 6000 during the windy months.
