Weird weather event in North Dakota
« on: May 21, 2009, 09:03:10 AM »
We just had a freak weather event happen not far from me.  I had a normal May day.  It was a high of 73 that day for me.

But basically, around 2am, a weather front caused the air in a small area to heat up rapidly.  I didn't see in the article what the temp was before the rise, but I would guess in the 60's.  In a matter of minutes, it was in the 90's.

92merc,
Thanks for posting the article.  I am wondering if this type event is similar to a "heat burst" which is caused by the collapse of super cells?  There is a post on the severe weather board called "rare heat burst hits Oklahoma City" and it describes something very similar (rapid rise in temperature and high winds). :-k
                    thanks again for the article,
                    Mark

That is strange that has happened twice this year. I have never heard of it until now.

Downlinerz2, yeah, that's kind of why I posted it.  I've been busy lately and usually only skim this board.  But I remember reading a little on that thread, not all that long ago.  So that's why I had to post it.  I thought if it is the same, odd it's happened twice in one year.

Oklahoma and ND are both in tornado alley region.  So I wonder if that had anything to do with it.

Our local CBS had a "weather extra" on it last night on TV.  They had a good explanation.  The video isn't online yet.  But when it does show up, I'll try to post a link.  But they interviewed our Bismarck NWS office.  The guy there said it was really rare.  He saw one when he worked in Boise ID, but that was it.

My local station is pretty slow putting up their videos.  The "WeatherExtra" segment is every week.  They only have back to January at the moment.  So who knows when it'll be up.  But I'll post a link to that spot in case I forget to check.
